Growing Boy My Eye

Characters: Matril, Dealiya, Tayan
Description: Matril and Dealiya flirt a little during the noon meal.
Location: Smith Hall (NPC)
Date: month 5, day 6 of Turn 4

The pot was heavy, and hot, and the apprentices were crowding as Dealiya brought the stew out to the serving bench. "Please! Will you all just stand back? I really _don't_ want to scald anyone." her voice appeared lost in the crowd.

Matril reached out wide, making sure those beside him were safe from the pot. "But it sure smells good, Dealiya."

She gave a short laugh, "Yes Matril, but with you lot, anything is edible, whether it smells good or not." She finally lay the pot down on the table, "Ok, don't kill me in the rush, you lot. You know the drill, form orderly lines."

She wasn't any older than the boys who surrounded her, but they were so used to following orders, they naturally obeyed her instructions and lined up to the side of the servery. The other workers were bringing out think, steaming chunks of bread which had been roughly pulled apart; and a cauldron of hot klah.

She turned and indicated for the boys to start moving forward. "Just be careful, the klah and the stew are both hot!" she cautioned as she turned back tot he kitchen to bring a replacement cauldron of stew.

"Bossy britches." Tayan commented as Dealiya disappeared back into the kitchen.

"And if you burned yourself," Matril said, "you'd probably blame her for that too, huh?"

"Ohhh, did I hit a sore spot?" Tayan pushed the hair out of his eyes, and looked at Matril closely. "So serious..." he taunted.

"No, but she has a job to do, just like the rest of us."

"You're no fun." Tayan sulked, and looked over the boy in front's shoulder. "There's not much stew left - hope they have some more out -"

"Okay, move back, move back." Once more Dealiya made her way through to the servery. "I knew it wouldn't take you lot long to get through the first lot." She smiled to soften her words, "There's plenty more, and we'll keep it coming. Can't have you lads wasting away to nothing, now can we?"

"But look at me," Matril laughed, pounding his well muscled chest. "I'm vanishing before your eyes."

"I can see that." Dealiya laughed, "You poor, malnourished little thing." She gave him a disbelieving look, before hefting the large cauldron up onto the servery and looking into the other. "Got here just in time it seems, but look! How many of you have taken bread to fill you as well? The basket is still almost full. How you manage to clean the plates is beyond me, with nothing left to mop the juices with."

"Well, it's your own fault, Dealiya."

"My fault? And how do you work that out Matril?" she turned her eyes to him, frowning.

"If the food wasn't so good, we wouldn't eat so much of it."

"Ah yes, but -" she nodded, "- if you would all eat some of the bread as well, you'd feel more full earlier _and_ you'd have more energy."

Matril tilted his head and looked at her inquisitively.

"What?" she took a step back, "What's wrong?" She suddenly felt a shiver crawl up over her spine, "If there's something on me, _get_ _it_ _off_ _me_ _now_!"

"What?" he said, bordering on panic. "Who said some thing was on you?"

She felt a shiver run though her spine, "Well if there's nothing on me, why were you looking at me strangely?"

"I was trying to understand why eating less would make me more full."

"I'm not saying you'd be eating less." Dealiya chuckled, "Faranth help me, if I tried to feed any of you less." She looked around at the grinning faces, but the bread would help fill you. And its fresh out of the ovens, or was about a candlemark ago. I know you _men_ like meat - but you need some variation in your diet!"

"I am just a growing boy," he said, trying to look small.

"Growing boy my eye!" she scoffed. "Well, here's a full cauldron - again." she said, indicating another kitchen worker making her way through the queue. "Plenty to go around, and you - ." she said, poking Matril in the chest, "Growing boy or not, make sure you have some of the bread to mop up the juices, you'll thank me for it later." she grinned, gave him a brief wink and turned to make her way back to the kitchen.
