Aiming for the Perfection

Writers: Emma, Paula
Date Posted: 30th September 2008

Characters: Thanja, Eilomar
Description: Eilomar invites Thanja to watch the choir practice.
Location: Harper Hall
Date: month 12, day 3 of Turn 4

"I haven't seen you around in a while," commented the Hallsecond as she walked past the Master Harper sat at a table in dining hall.

"Hallsecond," Eilomar acknowledged her. "I've been busy with the approaching Turn Over. I have to whip the choir into a shape and train the vocals before it."

"Are you doing any new material this time?" asked Thanja.

"Yes, most of it is new, which is why I have so much work with it. Of course, there are also the old favourites."

"I'm sure they will go down well with the audience. I believe we'll be expecting the Weyrleaders and the new Hallmaster from the Dolphin Hall."

"I do hope so. Anything else would be blow to the Hall's and my reputation," Eilomar growled. He did take a personal pride from the fact that his choir was the best one.

"I think they'd love the performance." Despite the attitude, Thanja knew that Eilomar was devoted to his work and would always try to bring the best out of his choirs.

"That's what I aim for," Eilomar said.

"And we have some superb musicians here to accompany your singers."

"Yes, we do," Eilomar agreed.

"There's no way Almonteo would have anything other than the best."

"I'm not going to disappoint him," Eilomar promised.

"You won't." There was a tone of understanding there. "So long as you and your singers do their best, you won't."

"I make them to do their best. I know people think that I am a hard taskmaster but you can't gain perfection without working _hard_."

"No, you can't. Just don't let it become the be all and end all. Remember some of those singers are young."

Eilomar looked annoyed. "My training as a singer started when I was old enough to form coherent words."

"But some only started as apprentices."

Eilomar shrugged. "Their loss," he said indifferently.

"I'm sure it will be a wonderful show."

"Oh, it will be," Eilomar chuckled. "I just love the new stuff Endras sent for me." The fat harper was almost purring with pleasure.

"And we'll all just have to wait until the dress rehearsal to even have a hint?"

"You're welcome to watch the rehearsals," Eilomar invited genially, feeling generous. "It won't be same as the final performance, thought," he warned.

"I might take you up on that, I'll want to get some sketches to include in the programme."

Eilomar just nodded. He was actually starting to like Thanja, which was odd, especially for him.

"I'd want those sketches to be the best. And it takes the best to get the best out of people."

"Yes, it does," Eilomar agreed.

"Which is all any of us try to be."

"_I_ certainly try," Eilomar said.

"And it is noticed."
