K'reyel

K'reyel

It's a nice day out there," commented the Weyrleader as he watched the ship
carrying the latest tithe approach the dock. It wasn't something he'd
normally do, but K'reyel felt the need of a break from hidework.

"So it is," Tamah agreed. The Harbour master shaded his eyes with his
hand and studied the ship. His two firelizards circled around them.
"Heavy load," he commented when he noticed how low she rode.

"Hopefully it'll be worth it though. Tithes could consist of different
things at different times. Dried fruits perhaps, or foodstuffs from a hold
that had a speciality of one sort or another. "Where's she from?"

"Jade Harbour, but she has also been picking up cargo along the
coastline," Tamah replied. He knew all the ships, their routes and
schedules that came to River Bluff Weyr regulary.

K'reyel nodded. "What are we expecting from this load then?"

"I hope not live cattle," Tamah said with a grimace.

"They're not good aboard ship?" asked K'reyel, curiosity in his voice.

"They the worst possible cargo. You have to feed them, water them and
then there's the manure. They get restless in a crowded cargohold
without any chance to exercise. There's usually few death among them
when the stress gets too much or they start to fight," The seacrafter
explained.

"Maybe there'll be some good hides, they always come in useful." That
wasn't just the voice of the Weyrleader, it was that of a tanner who knew
that clothing, footwear and riding straps were only the start of things that
could be made from hides.

"We'll see," Tamah said. "Do you want to hang aroud to see it yourself
or shall I dropp off the cargo manifest to your desk later?"

"I'll have a look at it later, I have a feeling I've escaped duty for long
enough now."

"How come? You're here to greet incoming people," Tamah said
teasingly. It would take at least a half a candlemark yet before that
ship was docked and they could start unloading it.

"I think they sneak in and add more to the pile of hides on my desk that
want me to do things to them, much as I would like to stay."

Tamah laughed. "I know the feeling."

"Then I'll see you later with the manifest?" It was a suggestion, the
Harbour Master didn't need to bring it when he could so easily send an
apprentice. Also it was more among Tsaera's remit to deal with it.

"Yep, " he promised laconically. The Weyrleader's office was on his
way to home anyway.

"Thanks for this Tamah."

"No problems, Weyrleader," the Harbour master replied.
