Ordinary Hold Girl

Writers: Cali, Jane, Paula
Date Posted: 29th July 2008

Characters: Zandreu, Barthella, Venciel
Description: Venciel shows up for work at the Tavern
Location: Amber Hills Hold
Date: month 10, day 19 of Turn 4

The Tavern Master had intended to keep an eye out for the new worker -
Journeyman Keayd's sister, he reminded himself - but he got
distracted. Lured into the office he seldom used by the chance of
finding a missing account from months before his arrival he was
surrounded by piles of papers and hides when the young woman arrived.

"Master Zandreu?" Venny asked, peeking in nervously. She had spent the
morning dressing up carefully and braiding her hair. Last night she
had slept fitfully due nerves.

"Ahh, Venciel. You're -" She wasn't early - Well, perhaps she was,
but he was only caught out because he hadn't been expecting her until
he'd found the missing account. "On time. Good. No doubt Barthella
will like that. Come on, I'll take you through to meet her."

"Yes, sir," she said obediently.

He led the girl into the kitchens which were already busy though
breakfast was the least busy meal of the day, only being served to
guests who had stayed overnight and to the staff. "Barthella," he
called, waving a hand at the head cook on the other side of the room.
"When you have a moment."

Venny eyed the kitchen with keen interest. This was the place she was
going to work for now on. She just hoped the Head cook would like her.

Barthella added the citrus juice and sprig of mint to the pitcher of
water, then placed it on the tray of klah before handing it off to one
of the girls to take out to their morning patrons. That task
completed, and nothing of emergency showing itself, she walked over to
Zandreu. "Is this the girl that's starting?" she asked as she looked
her over.

"This is her," Zandreu confirmed. "Venciel, this is the head cook,
Barthella. Barthella, this is Journeyman's Keayd's sister, Venciel."

"I'm pleased to meet you, Barthella. Please, just call me Venny," the
girl greeted and smiled. She hoped she would like her.

She returned the smile, "Well Venny, tell me a bit about yourself. What
sort of skills do you have to offer?"

"Can I leave her with you, Barthella?" Zandreu asked, thinking of the
work he should be getting started.

"Yes, that's fine." Barthella replied off handily. He had more
important things to do than hover over this new girl.

"Well, I'm an ordinary hold-girl. I've helped my step-mother to tend
my younger siblings. I can cook some, clean and do laundry, the usual
household chores. I'm hard working and eager to learn," Venny replied
the Head Cook's question.

She nodded, not pleased by the answer, but not surprised either.
"Well we'll move you around a bit the first few sevendays and see if
you excel at anything, your modesty could be doing you a disservice."
but she doubted it.

Well, that didn't sound very promising start, Venny thought. She was
sure she could prove herself capable worker.

"I'll introduce you to Deyana, she's in charge of cleaning rooms and
it'll give you a chance to get to know the place a bit." Better to
start her with one of the less desirable jobs first to make sure she's
serious about the job.

"All right," Venny said, determined not to complain no matter what!

"If you have any questions or problems though, you talk to me,
understand?" Barthella added, the girl was no use to anyone if she
just sulked in the corner instead of allowing issues to be addressed.

"Yes, ma'am," Venny replied with a smile.
