Description: Royah and Benaran have a "discussion" about the plan to make up
the missing tithes.
Location: Amber Hills Hold
Date: month 10, day 27 of Turn 4
The stack of hides was carelessly deposited on Benaran's desk. "Father
wanted me to bring these to you personally," said Royah as he sat,
totally uninvited on a corner of his brother's desk.
The elder brother sat back in his chair to regard the younger. "Oh? And
exactly what are they?"
"Stuff to do with the recent tithes going missing. Father wanted it
dealt with discreetly."
Benaran nodded. "We certainly don't want to let everyone know about it."
He pulled the first hide toward him and squinted to read the notations.
"This is certainly going to create a hardship for the rest of us."
"I know, but what can we do until we can make it up?"
"Nothing," Benaran told him. "Absolutely nothing. And if we want to
remain truly discreet, we'll have to bear the brunt of it ourselves."
"Father said something very similar," although he had not been quite as
blunt thought Royah.
"Of course he did. We've discussed this and are agreed in our approach
to this." Of course, Benaran felt his father was being too soft on the
holders but they often had such differences.
"You're sure?" Royah thought perhaps he had detected a hint of something
in his brother's voice, but couldn't be cetain. "You didn't think of
something else?"
The older man narrowed his eyes as he studied the younger. "Of course
we're in accord. Have you heard differently?"
"It was just the way you said it that's all," was Royah's quick response.
"Then you read it wrong." Benaran drew back his shoulders haughtily.
"And you should watch your interpretations. A mis-spoken word could give
others the idea that the family is not functioning as a unit."
As if he'd do that! Royah knew where his duty lay. "You know I wouldn't
do that."
"Not on purpose, but that doesn't mean that we shouldn't take care."
He knew he should be annoyed at the implication, but as fast as the
feeling arose it was gone. "Anyway, I have to get back, Father might
need me."
"True, he may have more errands for you." Benaran placed a hand
protectively on the stack of hides. "Meanwhile, I have _work_ to do."
"I'm sure you do," remarked Royah as he hopped off the desk.
Benaran did not respond, simply pulling the first hide toward him and
ignoring his younger brother.
