Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 10, day 8 of Turn 4
"Come on boy, it's all right." Lirit encouraged Scout and she slowly walked at the canine's side. The creature whimpered a bit, but continued to hobble along. They weren't too far from the Beasthealer's. Just a few more steps.
Lirit's walking stick came into contact with the door and he found the handle and opened it, guiding Scout inside. "Hello?" He called out softly, sensing that there was a presence there, he just didn't know who.
"Come in.." Taia was busy filing the hides away from the morning rounds.
She turned at and glanced towards the doorway, her attention immediately taken as she realised her visitor was blind. "Can I help you?" she asked, at first wondering if he hadn't made a mistake and come to the wrong infirmary, then she noted that the canine was limping. "Your canine, what happened?"
"I'm really not sure." Lirit shook his head, his fingers reaching down to caress the top of his companion's head. "We were playing, I heard him yelp and then all of a sudden he's walking strangely."
"Okay, let's have a look at your leg, eh, fella?" she walked over, and allowed the canine to smell her hands, before patting him and lifting him carefully up and walking slowly across to an examination table. "How long ago?" She asked the journeyman who followed carefully at the end of the lead.
"Just today, a little earlier. We were playing ball." Lirit moved closer as the healer carried his canine. "I don't know if he managed to wrench his leg in a hole or what."
"Well I can't feel any damage to the bone, but his leg is swelling." she lifted the foreleg, and checked the pad carefully. "Ah...I see."
"You found something?" Lirit leaned forward, as if he were trying to see as well. "What's wrong?"
"He's managed to somehow pick up a needlethorn tip in his paw, between the pads. No wonder he's been in such pain and loathe to step on that leg.
"I'll have it out in a jiffy." she said, "Just keep him here on the table, and I'll get some redwort to wash the wound with."
"Oh, good. I mean, not good that he's done that but I was afraid it would be something worse." Lirit slid his arms around his companion who whined but remained still save for a little thumping from his tail. "Good boy.
You're a good boy."
She soaked the canine's paw in redwort, before separating the pads on his paw. With a pair of tweezers she pulled the offending thorn from his pad, and inspected it closely to make sure nothing was missing from the end. "I got it all." she assured the journeyman. "I'll wash his paw again, and then wrap it well. I'm afraid though, he won't be able to walk for a day or so, until the infection goes down. Is there someone I can send for, who can assist you for the next day or so?"
"Assist me?" Lirit's eyebrows shot up. "Oh, he's not trained to do that.
I didn't know anyone who could train him, though he's trained well enough to behave. I get around just fine on my own." He grinned, still stroking his friend. "But I thank you for assisting him."
"Oh, sorry..." she blushed a little, embarrassed for making such a mistake. "I just assumed.. " She collected her thoughts for a moment, "You can leave him here until tomorrow. It would be best if he didn't walk too far."
"Sure, whatever's best for him." Lirit nodded. "You're the expert on the matter. Me? I wouldn't know what to do for the life of me. I'd never make a good healer. Now music...that I can do. As long as I don't have to actually compose something new anyway."
"You write music?" she smiled, the evenings were good in the dining cavern when the harpers got together to share their music.
"Oh no. No no no no." Lirit shook his head emphatically. "See, that's what I do _not_ do. Trust me, you never, EVER want to hear anything I've written. You'd probably go insane because your brain would melt from the awfulness of it."
"You sing then?" she said trying to stifle her laughter at his reaction.
"Yes I sing, quite well if I do say so myself." Lirit's smile flashed brightly at her. "I play for entertainment in the dining hall from time to time and, of course, we have recitals and what not. I've got one next month, actually."
"That's where I've seen you before!" she exclaimed, realisation finally coming to her. She had recognised the canine as well, but the blindness that was obvious when close to the man, hadn't been so at a distance -
which had thrown her memory off a little. "Oh, sorry." she laughed softly, "It's just - I recognised you but couldn't think were from."
"She knows me! I'm famous!" Lirit laughed and swept a bow. "My name is Lirit. Might I have the pleasure of knowing yours?"
"Taia." She laughed. "My name is Taia. And really - you should have introduced me to your companion earlier, I still don't know his name..."
"How rude of me! This is Scout." The dog's ears perked up at the sound of his name.
"Well met, Scout." she ruffled the canine's ears again. "Well I should put this fellow in a pen for the night. Would you like to say goodbye to him for now?" she asked.
Lirit leaned over and encircled his arms around the canine's neck. "I'll be back for you tomorrow, boy. You be good for Taia, now." He ruffled the back of the dog's neck, then took a step away. "He's all yours."
"Thanks Lirit, I'll take good care of him, I promise."
A slow, warm smile was given to Taia. "I know you will."
