Have A Nice Life

Writers: AL, Emma
Date Posted: 29th May 2008

Characters: M'van, Kitali
Description: M'van confronts Kitali about her lunch with F'naren
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 10, day 8 of Turn 4

Reports were done, and the children were making progress. She had a couple of stragglers, but that was all right. Kitali had also set up a recital. She was overdue for one and she had been given some leniency, but she didn't want to overstretch it. It would be in the next month. It had been too long since she had done a real performance. Perhaps she should look into one of the Harper Hall performances as a guest Harper. Well, she'd talk to the Master about that.

Kitali made her way out of the room where she normally taught, a pleasant smile upon her face. She checked the door to be sure it latched, then turned. She could get the boys and spend the rest of the day with them. That was always a joyous thing.

"There you are."

Kat stopped and turned at the sound of a familiar voice. She reached up, pushing a strand of hair out of her eyes and offering a small smile to the speaker. "Hello M'van. Were you looking for me?"

"I wanted to talk to you," the bluerider said as he leaned back against the corridor wall.

"Sure." Kitali wasn't sure to be pleased or suspicious. Would this be a proposition or a put down? It was hard to tell, sometimes, especially with M'van, because she didn't want to read anything into any of his body language for fear of misinterpreting it. "What can I do for you?"

"I saw you yesterday, with that brownrider."

That caused Kitali to pause - that was a topic she hadn't expected at all. "With F'naren? Yes, we were having lunch together."

"And the boys too," he commented.

"Yes, the boys were with me." Kitali crossed her arms over her chest.
"It was a rest day, after all."

"You were rather 'friendly' with him." There was an edge to the bluerider's voice. Could Kitali be moving on to another man already?
He wasn't sure how he felt about that.

"Well, yes, I would say that is a correct assessment." Kitali shrugged. "We're friends. Friends are supposed to be friendly with one another."

"Just friends? You're sure there was nothing more to it?"

Kitali tilted her head, regarding the bluerider for a moment before asking softly, "Why would that matter, M'van?"

"What about the effect that could have on the boys? They've had enough upheaveal in the last few months."

Kitali shook her head. Was he trying to play mind ames with her? Or was there something else to his questioning? "The boys are a lot more adaptable than you give them credit for. What's the _real_ reason?"

"You trying to get them a new father figure?"

"You're not answering my question, M'van. Why does it matter to you?"

"I want my son to know who his father is and not wonder why his mother sees so many different men, And as for Lidrin, he's old enough to wonder why and ask questions even if Talvan can't yet."

Kitali did a double take, hands dropping to rest upon her hips. What kind of woman did he think she was? "So many different men? You make it sound as if I'm running around with half the men in the weyr."

"You could be for all I know."

Kitali's eyes widened and her mouth opened and closed. Then, she stepped forward and reached up to slap M'van. "How _dare_ you!"

He was just quick enough to grab her hand, "I guess I asked for that."

Kitali tried to wrench out of his grasp, tears burning in her eyes. "I've never been unfaithful to you, even when I was away! I've never even _thought_ about another man. The only one I've thought about, despaired over has been you. I guess I was foolish for it!"

"Maybe you were," he said somewhat harshly as he let go her hand.

Kitali let her hand drop and swallowed. "So is that it then?"

"I think so." He took a step back. "I should go."

"So..." Kitali's voice caught, but she had to ask, "You don't love me at all. You have feelings left for me what so ever?"

"I don't love you," he said. It was harsh, he knew, but the way she was, and to have just gone like that...

"I guess that explains all the nights I was left alone before I went back North." Kitali's voice was sharp and she turned away. "Have a nice life, M'van." With that she hurried down the hallway.
