Some Day

Writers: AL, Jane
Date Posted: 9th May 2008

Characters: Seriand, Westni
Description: Seriand asks to borrow Westni's class notes.
Location: Dolphin Hall
Date: month 10, day 2 of Turn 4

"Come on, Westni. Let me read your notes," Seriand begged, jogging along beside the other apprentice. "If you will, I'll come and swim with you whenever you want."

It was an easy promise, because he liked to swim, and the apprentices who had extra swim training to do had to organise their own safety partner. He used the offer as often as he could because being out in the bay also reduced the chances that he could be held to account for any of his many failings. The journeymen and masters couldn't scold him if they couldn't find him.

"Why should I?" Well, there was the fact that she would automatically have a partner, but even that offer wasn't necessarily enough to convince Westni to do so.

"Because you're such a kind-hearted girl - and because you take such great notes?"

"And you're too lazy to take notes yourself." Westni rolled her eyes and shook her head. "And you want to mooch off the work that others have done. Sorry Seriand, but no."

"Aww, that's not nice. You know you need a safety partner for swimming and I won't grumble about you disturbing my study when you say it's time to go out. You know I won't."

"I'm not going to allow you to cheat just so I can have a partner."
Westni grumbled, her arms crossing over her breast as she stared down the other dolphineer. "Why can't you just buck up and do your own work?"

"I like this way better. And it's not cheating. I was there, remember.
I could have taken notes if I'd wanted to. And it's not like you'll be reading them every moment of the evening."

"It feels like cheating," Westni stated dryly, "Because I'm the one who did the work and you benefit from being lazy. If you really wanted notes, you should have taken them yourself. Now...go away!"

Seriand considered doing as she ordered but it was worth another try.
Westni's notes were the best in the class. "A fair exchange of work wouldn't be cheating. Apparently you don't think me being your safety swim-mate is fair recompense for just _reading_ your notes - so, what is?"

"No, no, no, no, and no!" Okay, so Seriand did have a point. Had it been someone else, Westni probably would have given in long ago.
However, it wasn't someone else, it was Seriand, and his laziness was rather infamous - plus there was the fact that he just plain irritated her. "What part of 'no' do you not understand?"

"What part of - It won't have the slightest affect on your precious notes to let me read them over - don't you understand? It won't hurt the notes, it won't disadvantage anybody in the class - not even you, and I'm prepared to trade something you need for the opportunity. Don't you think you're being a bit selfish?"

Westni leveled her gaze at Seriand, her temper starting to flare.
"That's the pot calling the kettle black. You don't want to put any effort into anything that has to be done, yet you want to mooch off the efforts of others. If you at least tried from time to time, I would be happy to share my notes. However, until you start doing things for yourself instead of leeching off the efforts of others, then I guess I will just have to be selfish."

"Aww, that's a bit unkind." Seriand had no temper to match hers with, only an ability to sidle away from conflict. He sighed, making it clear his life was being made more difficult than it had to be. "I guess I'll just have to go and find somebody else to borrow the notes from. See you later, Westni."

Westni watched Seriand saunter off, eyes rolling back. She really hoped no one would let him look at their notes. If he just wasn't so lazy, she wouldn't have an issue with it. With a delicate snort, she turned and stalked off. Some day, he would learn that he couldn't get by on the efforts of others. She just wondered when.
