Pleasant Evening

Writers: Avery, Eimi
Date Posted: 5th May 2008

Characters: M'galec, Eridhiya
Description: M'galec and Eridhiya share fine wine and finer company...
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 9, day 12 of Turn 4

M'galec filled the dragonhealer's glass with fine red wine. "That was incredible work you did on that green's sails, I have to say. That must have taken you the better part of the Fall to connect all those shreds together."

It had been a hard Fall for Eridhiya. Once the green had come in, she'd had to abandon the thought of helping any but the traumatized green; the other dragonhealers had had to handle most of the rest of the injuries.
Even with the aid of a journeyman dragonhealer, it had taken a long time. "It took us more than half." she agreed. "I'm still uncertain if she'll ever fly again." she added somberly. "How is her rider doing?"

"He will recover. He will mostly walk without needing to use a cane.
Depending on how his healing progresses, it may well be that with a bit more treatment, he may even be able to rejoin a fighting wing again."
M'galec had impressed even himself on that one.

Eri was surprised. The greenrider had been in bad shape when the pair had landed. "He looked badly off. Was he your worst case of the Fall?"

"Luckily, yes. He was just about my _only_ case during the Fall." Like his green, the rider had required the bulk of the healer's attention.
"But I have certainly seen much worse in Falls past."

"Especially the first few Falls, I'd imagine." Those had been horrible times for riders and dragons, healers and dragonhealers alike. "At least we lose less of our patients now." Oh, there were always the ones that couldn't be saved, and yet now they knew the techniques for Threadfall treating, so there was less of the loss because you just didn't know what to do.

"Well, in the first Falls I was in a Fighting Wing. But it quickly became apparent that I was far more useful on the ground." It took a special kind of cool confidence to deal with some of the injuries that came across their tables. Threadfall surgery was hard and fast -
nothing like the surgery they had done before to mend ulcers, bones that set poorly, deliver babies... Putting bodies back together was so much easier when you started off with all the parts in tact to begin with.

"I'm sure we'd lose many without you." It wasn't insincere flattery, either. "Do you ever miss being in a fighting wing?"

"Never," he replied emphatically. "I was always a healer first. I could not stand watching my wingmate's bodies be ripped apart and do _nothing_. Any rider can flame Thread, but few can do what I can do and even fewer as well as I do it."

"I agree. Your talent is too great to be put at risk." she told him. As for the idea that anyone could flame Thread... "Although if some riders could flame better, we wouldn't have to patch them up." It was as caustic a comment as she ever made.

"I would have to agree with you," M'galec sighed. "Past Weyrlingmasters were... ill prepared to train the young pairs, especially. I hope that we have improved somewhat in the last turn or two."

"It wasn't entirely their fault, when no one knew how to fight Thread or treat it. None of us really expected to face it again, so I supposed our training lapsed. We should not have made that mistake, I suppose."

"We _all_ thought Thread would not return. Even _me_." The words were said as if anyone could have known, it should have been him.

"You weren't a Harper, and they knew what to look for just as well as any dragonrider. The signs were all but forgotten. If only..." But there was no way to change the past. "It's fortunate that you weren't a Harper, though." she teased.

"I would have been wasted as a harper," the bronzerider agreed.

"We need your abilities far more than they would." she said. "Can you sing?" she suddenly inquired. His voice wasn't unpleasant, after all.
She'd used to enjoy it when she was younger, though she'd never dreamed of being a harper herself.

"Oh. Uhhh..." The question took him by surprise. Clearing his throught he said, "I.. don't really enjoy singing, unfortunately."

She couldn't help but smile slightly. "You prefer to listen to the harpers, then?"

"I do enjoy music," he quickly agreed. It was only singing he hated.
His voice was so very... average.

"Perhaps on a free night, we could go to Dolphin Cove." she suggested.
"One of the things I miss about there is hearing the Harper Hall's performances. If we could find out when one was, we could attend it and enjoy it together."

"I would absolutely love that," the bronzerider smiled, already imagining what a fine time they would have together. "Having a chance to hear the Harper Hall musicians would be well worth the trip. Of course, your company would make it even more memorable."

She was pleased by his ready acceptance. These meals were certainly a treat, M'galec's company was so enjoyable. To go out on an occasion would be even nicer. "I think that between the music and the company, the night will certainly be wonderful."

"It is settled then. We will go." M'galec grinned happily, gently clinking his glass against hers.

"I'll be sure to inform you the next time I hear of a concert." she promised. Hopefully she'd find out about a formal event- then she could dress nicer than usual, perhaps, and perhaps he'd notice it. "Would you prefer a formal event, or just an informal gathering? I know that both occurr." No point in planning for one if he would enjoy the other.

"Hmmm... I think I would prefer a formal event, though an informal one would be lovely too. I just have found the audience is a bit more...
cultured, when the concert is a formal one." Few people talking through the music, spilling drinks, chewing loudly, moving around like herdbeasts...

"I shall try my best, then."
