"Er, excuse me Sir?" Alaveil waited for the Master Harper to finish collecting his plates from the table, patiently. "Er, Sir, I have a letter here from my father, addressed to you. He said it was a message from my grandmother. I haven't opened it Sir." he said with a nervous smile.
"Oh? Alaveil was it?" Eilomar looked at the boy with mixed feelings.
He had been deliberedly avoiding running into him for months now, ever since he learned about his excictance and the possible blood-connection between them.
"Yes Sir," Alaveil said, standing just a little straighter and taller, surprised that the Master would remember him from the hundreds of apprentices he would have known in his life. "My grandmother sent this for you." he said again, holding out the letter.
Eilomar took the letter, holding it gingerly, like it could explode to his hand or contain something dangerous. It probably did contain something, if not dangerous then at least shocking.
"You're feeling better now Sir?" Alaveil asked, disappointed that it didn't look as thought the Master would be opening his grandmothers letter while he was with him. "You didn't look so well the last time I saw you." he said, watching the man fingering the letter gingerly. If Alaveil didn't know better he could have sworn the man didn't want the letter.
"Much better," Eilomar replied, still staring the letter. Did he want to know what it said? Did he want it to confirm his suspicions?
"Dad said in my letter that gran was really surprised to hear you were here. Said something about 'what goes around comes around'?" He himself hadn't understood the cryptic message at all, but he hoped Eilomar would be able to explain in some way.
Eilomar understood it all too well, and he dreaded to open the letter and read it. He feared what it might confirm. He took a knife and opened letter slowly.
Alaveil watched the Masters face, rather surprised to see the older man's face drain of what little colour he had. He looked as though he was scared of what Alaveil's grandmother might have written, but surely that couldn't be the case? They didn't even know each other, did they?
"Is everything alright Sir?" he asked nervously.
"It's..." Eilomar hesitated. "I don't know if it is good or bad," he sighed. He looked the letter again. Then he studied to boy's face. So, he had a son and a grandson he hadn't know about. She also said she had sent letters after he had left the mountain hold, to tell him her pregnancy and of their son's birth. But those letters never reached him. He had been travalling a lot during that time, singing in Gathers and other feasts. One thing he did know. She deserved an answer.
"If I write an answer to your grandmother, could you make sure she gets it?"
"I can send it by flit, Sir." Alaveil nodded. "It'll get there as soon as you have finished writing it." He nodded eagerly, pleased the Master wasn't angry or upset by what his grandmother had written, but perplexed all the same. How did they know each other, he wondered. There was more to Eilomar's reaction, he just didn't know what.
Eilomar nodded thoughtfully.
"Just let me know when you're ready Sir." Alaveil said, not sure if he had the Masters' attention.
"I'll find you when it's ready," Eilomar said. He had a feeling that writing that letter wouldn't be easy and might take him a quite a long time.
"I'll be waiting Sir." Alaveil nodded, and turned to leave the Master to his ruminations.
