Description: The Senior Weyrlings get placed in their Wings before the ceremony
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 7, day 11 of Turn 4
Notes: Congrats to our Senior Weyrlings! Feel free to rip off those knots and be real dragonriders now! Also, many apologies on how late this is. My LOA put a serious damper on the pace of this post. Eeep!
"Well, gentlemen. We have thirty-two Weyrlings to graduate and place in Wings if they're of age, and if I remember correctly, most of them are." Tsaera smoothed out the edges of the hide before her and smiled at the table full of bronzeriders. Tabanirth's m13 clutch were almost finished their Weyrling lessons, and not a moment too soon. "And I have a Graduation Feast to plan. R'syl would you please begin?"
R'syl climbed slowly to his feet, settling his hides of notes in front of him before facing the wingleaders and weyrwoman. He was about to lose his Weyrlings, his first batch to these men he barely knew... "Of course, Weyrwoman. This clutch had a standard breakdown of colors, and most of them are older, so M'galec and I will only be gaining a few new assistants." He smiled humorlessly. "I'm going to start by suggesting we place the blues first. It's come to my attention that Torrent Wing," he nodded at U'das. "...is currently a few short. G'nord and I'poro are both younger, but they have proven themselves to be competent."
U'das nodded and scribbled the names down to his notes. "We're also bit short on greenriders due pregnancies and injuries," he said.
"I've noticed. My Wing has been unusually full of late," Tsaera said dryly, then made a note on her own hide. "But we've got eleven to move into Wings so you'll both have a complete Wing, so long as nobody getsthemselves seriously injured in their first real Fall. Do any of the greenriders bear a mention outside their files?"
"Could do with a greenrider or two for my Wing as well," commented K'sedel.
The Weyrlingmaster's Second, M'galec, felt the need to speak up. "There has been a few problems with some of the green Weyrlings, unfortunately. Tibith's rider, Honalyse, comes to mind. Rumor has it that she did not faithfully follow our strict rules for waiting until Senior Weyrlinghood before engaging in sexual relations. Though I could not discover any proof, I do not think that is the kind of behavior we should condone. Who knows what kind of dangers we may expose a Wing to with her rebellious nature."
"Do you feel you should hold her back as one of your assistants for a while?" asked the Weyrleader. While he might need a greenrider or two, nobody needed a troublemaker.
Tsaera frowned. "I wouldn't want to condemn a Weyrling on the strength of a rumor, and lets not forget that a great number of Weyrlings settle down once they've been initiated into a Fighting Wing. I won't have rumors holding back anyone from graduating."
"I agree, Weyrwoman." R'syl said, resisting the urge to glare at his 'second. Although they did reasonably well working together, there were still some key areas of weyrling training that they differed in, and this was unfortunately only one of them. "And the weyrling in question seemed to settle down quickly once Tibith received her own weyr. I think most of this batch will do the same."
M'galec sniffed in annoyance. "As you wish. It was merely a suggestion." Typical of the leadership at this Weyr. Well, when one of her Wingmates was Threaded or flamed due her negligence, he would just have to do what he could to save them. What this Weyr would do without him and his surgical skills...
"In that case perhaps she should go to my Wing," suggested K'sedel. The Weyrleader had a reputation for discipline, and few riders stepped out of line in his Wing more than once.
Tsaera made a note of it on her hide. "All right. Honalyse to Rapids Wing... perhaps G'nord as well, and then I'poro can fly with U'das. We have an odd set of blue and greenriders, though, so one of you will have to take an extra blue and one an extra green. Is there anyone in particular either of you want?"
"Either will be okay with to me," U'das said. "Y'kas needs a new wing-pair. His current one isn't working out with him."
"Perhaps Sh'vair and Nidogath then?" R'syl suggested, looking over the listing of weyrlings to be placed. "They're a friendly pair, very easy to work with. And I would suggest Rizona and Ucsonth for Rapids Wing. Ucsonth is small, but very fast and well able to fill some of your vacancies."
"That's sounds fine. Y'kas can tutor him in, being one of the most experienced greenriders in Torrent," U'das said and scribbled down more notes.
"Who's left?" asked K'sedel. The Weyrleader knew he could do with a good solid bronze or brownrider.
"Two bronzeriders, B'lamick and F'lin," U'das remarked after checking the list of graduating weyrlings. "One of each?" he looked the Weyrleader.
"Well, one of you gentlemen will need to take on my grandson," Tsaera reminded them, feeling slightly smug.
"One in each wing is only fair," agreed K'sedel. "How about you tell us of their strengths and weaknesses?" He asked of R'syl.
M'galec stiffled a rather contemptuous snort. Leave it to the Weyrwoman to remind _everyone_ that F'lin was _her_ grandson. Why didn't she just promote the boy to Wingleader now and get it over with!
"Perhaps F'lin to Rapids Wing, and B'lamick to Torrent?" R'syl suggested, hoping he'd judged personalities correctly. "F'lin can be moody, but Seneth is eager and intelligent enough to even them out into a reliable pair. And B'lamick is fairly easygoing and Latarth adapts quickly to anything you throw at them."
"Sounds like a plan to me," said the Weyrleader.
**Oh, of course you do. Weyrleaders...** M'galec thought silently with the barest hint of a shake to his head. Even R'syl couldn't help but stitch his lips to their buttocks, and then K'sedel being oh so eagar to please. After all, if he didn't keep the Weyrwoman satisfied, his position would be precarious.
"Okay," U'das murmured, adding B'lamick's name to his notes. "Was that all?" It didn' matter to him who he got, he was just satisfied to have a new bronzerider in his wing.
"I think that was the last name on the list?" K'sedel looked to R'syl for confirmation of that.
At R'syl's nod, the Weyrwoman put down her pen. "All right then, gentlemen. Prepair your Wings - you're getting new riders."
