Eyes to the Sky with Feet on the Ground

Writers: April, Stasha
Date Posted: 13th February 2008

Characters: M'delon, M'yex
Description: M'delon gets his head caught up in the clouds as he tosses firestone bags with M'yex and J'simo
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 8, day 17 of Turn 4

It was the beginning of the second month, which only meant that M'delon was only a month closer to finally flying with Valinth.
But for now he had to keep his feet on the ground, which meant he had to participate in drills of ground formations and firestone tossing. Still, he could not help but look over his shoulder to Valinth who was sitting on the rocks with his clutchmates curiously watching his rider.

}:We'll fly soon:{ Valinth replied to his riders thoughts.
}:When I am ready we will fly together, like we are supposed to:{ Soon, M'delon reminded himself. He stepped into formation with a group of other weyrlings he was less familiar with, accept for J'simo, and M'yex, who he only knew by name. Looking at him though, he easily saw why he Impressed a green.

M'yex looked about. He loved learning. To help himself he had imagined the formations as different pieces nit together to form the whole. He gave a smile to those around him. He had not had the pleasure to meet those in his group till now.

He tilted his head to remeber thier names. One was J'simo he believed. According to the gossip he was a bully, or at least had been. The other in his group was someone he had seen around.

**Oh, what was his name.** M'yex thought to himself. }:M'delon:{ Enyth supplied. }: You should have listened when the weyrling master called him to join you.:{ M'yex was slightly chastised.

M'delon had a basic idea on what to do. They were mostly throwing bags of firestones at each other in wing formation. It was nothing new to him. The formation was just a flavor, if anything, and nothing more.

"M'delon," J'simo called out to him and threw the bag in a nice arch.

M'delon nearly fumbled the bag, but he caught it. He was surprised with how much force the greenrider tossed it, but hopefully that would go away with practice. "M'yex," he attempted to get the weyrling's attention as he tossed them firestone bag towards him.

M'yex nodded and caught it. He had not expected it's weight. He nearly dropped it again. He smiled as he got his balance back and turned to J'simo. He tossed it with all his strength. He was happy that it made it all the way to the other weyrling. He was afriad it wouldn't.

"So are you guys excited to fly next month?" M'delon wanted to break out of the silence of routine, and flying was all he could think about.

"Well, I think everyone is," J'simo remarked the obvious as he tossed another heavy bag at M'delon. He glanced back at his green, and a smile carved on his face. "I know Uminath'll be ready when we start flying," he tossed another bag before he proudly added "I mean, she is one of the biggest greens of the clutch."

M'yex glanced over at his little green. She was one of the smallest. She was dainty and he worried for her. }:I will be ready. We will fly well. You will not harm me.:{ She seemed so cofident.

"Enyth says she will be ready." He caught the bag again and passed it on. "I believe her. I'm just worried about some of the others. I mean there are a few that need a bit of help. W'nid keeps tripping over his own feet." He glanced over to where W'nid was catching a firestone bag. The boy ended up falling face first into the dirt. The bag had unbalanced him.

"Do you think we'll all fly at once? Or will they let us start one by one?" He caught a glimps of W'nid falling over himself. The next pack that flew to M'delon nearly did the same, but he quickly steadied himself.

"I don't know ba-" J'simo caught himself and made the correction "M'delon. I'm sure we'll fly when we're ready." Though there was an internal fear that he might have to wait sense he was quiet a bit bigger than his own green regardless of her own large size.

"I think they send you up one at a time. That is if they think you are ready. At least that is what I think. Not to sure about it though." He shrugged.

"Have either of you flown on dragon back before?" J'simo passed the questioned to the two of them.

"I have," M'delon spoke up proudly. "Once, I flew with my dad, on his brown, Abath. And the second time, I flew with B'shen on Penesath." It was an exhilarating feeling, flying above the clouds on dragon back, and going /between/. He just hoped he could repeat the experience. He passed another glance at Valinth, impatiently waiting for the day when he could share the flight with his brown. **Soon** he reminded himself.

"Once." He sighed. M'yex had enjoyed it. It had been an experience he hadn't totaly been sure he would expirience before. "When I came to the Weyr. It was... like being free."

"I know the feeling." M'delon nearly drifted off into a daydream with him soaring with Valinth, high in the sky with his magnificent wings sweeping down taking them higher and higher and... A fire stone hit into M'delon taking him down. "Uff!"

"Oh!" M'yex ran over. "Are you alright?"

"Yeah," he was able to get to his feet.

}:You're hurt!:{ Valinth released, a concerned bugle to his lifemate.

**I'm okay** He calmed his brown. He was back on his feet now
**See?** Perhaps he should keep his thoughts out of the clouds, and keep his feet on the ground.

}:Well...okay, but be careful:{ M'yex smiled as the brown weyrling dusted himself off. "Perhaps flying should be left to dragons and night daydreams. I wouldn't want you to get hurt." He had a warm twinkle in his eye.

}:Is he alright Valinth:{ Enyth asked her brown clutchmate. She didn't want to distract M'yex as they went back to tossing the firestone.

}:He hurts a little bit, but he'll be okay. See?:{ The brown turned his snout to his love as he stood confidently back to his feet and tossed the sack that hit him.

"Try to be a little more careful with your throws, J'simo," he cautioned the greenrider.

"Well, pay attention and maybe it won't hit you again," the rider snapped back defensively.

M'delon did not like the tone used on him, but he kept his mouth shut, because J'simo was right. He simply nodded his head to the older rider.

"Perhaps we should all pay more attention. I would hate for anyone to get hurt." M'yex tried to be the calm voice. "We could always count off as we toss. Or we could each name things from our studies as we catch. You know something to help us as we toss and catch." He suggested.

"Name something? Like what?" J'simo muttered. It was a good idea though.

"Dragon anatomy?" M'delon suggested as he caught a sack squarely in the chest, but was able to hold onto it and remain on his feet. He tossed the bag to M'yex.

"Sounds perfect." M'yex caught the bag. "Tail." He smiled. Best to start off easy. This could be rather fun.
