"Almonteo, I need talk with you," Eilomar said, catching up with the Hallmaster after he had left the dining hall. The fat master was huffing and puffing after trying to catch up with him.
The Hallmaster resisted the urge to speed up, but he did allow himself a slight roll of his eyes before turning to the choral master with a bright smile. "Master Eilomar! I was just thinking that it had been a while since our last chat. How are you?"
"Just fine. It's about those new apprentices assigned to my choral classes..." Eilomar said.
"Oh? Which ones?" Almonteo asked innocently.
"The girls! I have girls in my class!" Eilomar said indignantly.
"But of course you do, my dear Eilomar," the Hallmaster said, putting a friendly hand on the rotund man's shoulder. "Their voices are beautiful, aren't they?"
"Probably. But they are girls. I haven't taught girls since.... the plagues."
"I know," Almonteo said excitedly, wrapping his arm around Eilomar's rather wide shoulder. "So of course, I knew there was no better choral master to handle them. If _anyone_ can teach these girls to sing, it would be you. Think of the wonder that will be on all those Holder's faces when they hear a choir with true female voices, many of them for the first time in their lives. And it will be all due to you."
Eilomar was pleased to hear the praise and it was also making him forget what further arguments he had against female apprentices.
"Thank you Hallmaster. It's nice to know that you appreciate my talents."
"Oh I do. I do Eilomar. That's why I knew I could entrust those beautiful young voices to your attentive care." **Poor girls...**
"I won't tolerate any girlish foolishness from them though," Eilomar warned, still glowing after the hallmaster's praise.
"I expect no less," Almonteo assured him, giving his shoulder a friendly squeeze. "But of course I know I can trust you to be stern but also treat them with the all consideration a true _gentleman_ always shows to a lady."
"Of course," Eilomar said vaguedly.
"Oh thank Faranth, I'm so glad that you agree. I knew I could trust you, Eilomar. You're a good man." And Almonteo would be watching to make sure he didn't abuse the girls at all. He didn't want them to be given special treatment, but certainly they should not suffer any more abuse than their male classmates. The Hallmaster knew that was harsh enough...
"You can always trust me, hallmaster," Eilomar said and you could see his chest swell with pride.
"You're a good man. Now, did you get the new music Endras brought for you?" the Hallmaster asked, purposefully changing the subject.
"Yes, a great stuff," Eilomar's eyes shone and he actually rubbed his hands together in glee. "Do we have any major concerts coming up near future? Or should we save it for the Turn over-celebrations. It needs something _BIG_ for it first performance!"
"Hmmm, well, if it warrents it, we might be able to find an event for it before Turns End. But I suppose its never too early to start thinking about it." It is only five months away, which was shorter than it sounded when it came to planning the festivities. "What is your opinion, Eilomar?"
"I would wait till the Turn over. That way I would have time to hammer the choir into the perfection."
"Then I will leave it to you, good Master Eilomar," the Hallmaster said giving the man's shoulder one more squeeze. "Well, I was so happy we had this chance to catch up. We must do it again soon. But now I really must keep my lunch appointment."
"Allright, Almonteo. I'm sure we see around here," Eilomar said with a nod.
"I'm sure you will!" And unfortunately that time would be sooner rather than later...
