"Hi K'sper, Bentith." Taia gave a half bow to the large brown as she stopped in front of the pair. The canine she had been walking, strained at his leash in the presence of the dragon. "Sit! Stay!" she commanded both verbally and with hand signals.

"Hiya, Taia!" K'sper barely gave her a glance before going forward and kneeling to the dog, offering a hand for the animal to sniff.

Bentith's head swung to regard the smaller creature, prompting a warning from his rider.

**Back, please. Don't scare him.**

The brown snorted as he withdrew his head and looked away disdainfully.

"I forgot how curious Bentith can be." Taia smiled warmly down at the rider. "This, by the way, is Muggins." she said, indicating the canine who sat patiently at her heel.

"And a fine specimen he is," K'sper remarked, one hand under the animal's jaw while the other scratched its head.

}:He looks ordinary to me,:{ was Bentith's reply.

**Stop sulking. You get plenty of attention.**

In response the brown lowered his head and gently pushed at Taia's shoulder.

"Oh a touch of jealousy, is it?" she grinned up at the dragon, turning to caress his muzzle and felt the warmth of his breath against her. "I'm trying to train him to find him a new home. He's been permitted free rein with the drudge who bought him from the last trader wagon we had through." she said, continuing to stroke Bentith around his eye ridges.

"And the drudge can't be instructed to have higher expectations of him?" asked the brownrider.

"Not this one." she shook her head, "Barely intelligent enough to control himself, let alone a canine. You don't want one, do you?" she asked quickly, a smile flashing across her face, "I'd train him up perfectly, honest."

"Well. . ." K'sper eyed the animal speculatively. **Bentith, would you like a pet?**

The dragon lifted his snout to regard the dog. }:For breakfast?:{ The brownrider shook his head. "No. I don't think it's a good idea right now."

"Are you sure?" she hadn't missed the blankness in his eyes while he had communicated with his dragon. "Are _you_ sure, Bentith?" she asked, turning back to the dragon and softly scratching over his eye ridges.

Bentith snorted and turned away, though he had enjoyed the beastcrafter's attention.

"To him, a canine looks more like a meal," K'sper told her. "In time he might change his mind but I don't think now would be the best choice."

"Well, it looks like my search goes on. And it's such a shame, I've had him a sevenday and the change has been remarkable. He's just like a big child, all he needed was boundaries, and he's a changed beast."

"It's tempting, very tempting." The brownrider eyed the canine with regret. "But I do share my weyr," he placed a hand on Bentith's flank, "and must consider more than my own feelings."

"Fair enough." Taia smiled wamrly, "I can't say I didn't try my best, but tell me - " she asked, grinning up at him, "Is there anyone you could recommend?"

K'sper paused thoughtfully before speaking. "Perhaps. . . perhaps one of the candidate's who didn't Impress? Someone who probably will be too old to stand for the next clutch?"

"Now why didn't I think of that?" she asked. "Of course, this fellow is no substitute for a dragon, but still... someone may find him a suitable companion." she nodded happily. "Thank you, K'sper. I think I should get back to his training, and let you get on with your day. Good-day Bentith." she turned and nodded her head to the dragon.

"Good-bye, Taia, and good luck!" The brownrider leaned against his dragon's flank as he waved to the Beastcrafter.

Bentith watched the canine as it moved away from them. }:I still think it would make a good breakfast.:{
