Description: Tey finds somebody quite unexpected to talk to after her first flight with Isleth.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 8, day 11 of Turn 4
Tey listened intently to the words of the weyrling staffmember, nodding when she understood, and then bounced away back to Isleth's side, unable to keep the wide happy grin under control a moment longer. First flight! They had taken to the air and landed. More than once. No grazed muzzles for Isleth, no back or neck strain for her, though Tey suspected the euphoria she was feeling could be masking all manner of aches and pains. She snuggled up against her lifemate's green hide and tried to concentrate on the next weyrling taking to the skies, but her mind was replaying their own moment of glory and she noticed very little.
With luck, the rest of the flights would go just this same way, thought the Weyrleader as he watched from the sides. Not many of the youngsters had noticed him, or so he thought. K'sedel made a point of at least watching some of them as they reached this milestone. There was something about the looks on their faces as they began to realise that they had at last been in the air with their lifemates, instead of watching them.
}:I could go again,:{ Isleth assured her rider. }:I can fly further.:{ "It's somebody else's turn now," Tey gently admonished her dragon.
"We'll fly again later."
That was a look he knew and understood. The look of an eager dragon and weyrling wanting to try their wings again, now that they knew what they were for. And a conversation that no doubt all riders would have had, and those to come would have as they then had to watch and wait for their turn to come again.
}:Nikornath's rider watches.:{ "Watches what?" Tey asked, looking around for the Weyrleader. "Ohhh.
Hello, sir."
"Weyrling," came the greeting. "You and your green did well."
At another time Tey might have stammered in surprise at being addressed by the Weyr's premier bronzerider but at that moment she was too proud of her dragon and excited by their achievement for nervousness to manifest itself. "Oh, thank you! She was _wonderful_ wasn't she?"
"She was," K'sedel recognised the enthusiasm for what it was.
Excitement, joy, any number of emotions as they wanted to celebrate their achievement.
"I know they can fly - that's what they do - but it's different when she flies with me, isn't it? Or Nikornath, with you."
"It's like you realise what the pair of you were meant for."
"Yes!" Tey's grin widened, if that was possible, in the face of the Weyrleader's understanding. "The _pair_ of us. She can fly without me, but I can't without her, but she _wants_ to fly with me. She _wants_ to have me there. I can tell."
"And no doubt she told you that?"
"Well ..." Tey considered that. "Not in _words_."
"They have a way of communicating." K'sedel knew he didn't need to say any more, any rider would understand that.
"What was it like when you and Nikornath first flew?"
"The most amazing feeling of freedom, and a realisation that it could only get better."
The weyrling nodded. "It's all the same; no matter the dragon colour."
"Just remember that you need to listen to the Weyrlingmaster, he'll help you two reach your potential."
"We will," Tey promised. Having had Ykana as an example she knew how things could go wrong in Threadfall; if learning everything she could be taught would prevent her own and Isleth's lives being cut short then she wouldn't stint on that learning.
"Well done again."
Tey nodded. "And thank you, again, sir."
