A Nice Dress

Writers: Jane, Rochelle
Date Posted: 28th November 2007

Characters: R'syl, Tey
Description: The Weyrlingmaster asks weyrling Tey what she is up to.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 6, day 27 of Turn 4

Nearly every colour worked with Tey's brown skin and dark hair and as she stepped out of the free-standing Weyrling Barracks building she was pleased with the pale yellow dress that she was wearing. It made her feel pretty and feminine and not at all like the frantically busy booted and trousered weyrling she was during the day.

R'syl was walking toward the barracks, intending to check on one of the young greens who'd tripped and bruised a wing earlier that day, when he saw one of the girls emerge. He blinked, trying to place the familiar face now so out of context.

}:Isleth's rider.:{ Usaeth said helpfully.

**Ah. Thank you.** "Hello, Tey." He acknowledged as he came up to the girl. To be honest though, he was surprised -and somewhat concerned- to see her out of the barracks and dressed so nicely. Now was the time when he had to tighten his tracking of weyrlings wanting to flout the relationship restrictions, but he hadn't suspected Tey might be one.
"You look very nice in that."

"Er -" Tey blinked in surprise. "Thank you, Weyrlingmaster."

"You're welcome." He replied automatically, giving her a warm smile.
"May I ask why you've taken the trouble to dress up?"

"Er -" Tey said again, then blushed, thinking the Weyrlingmaster would think she was some sort of dimglow. "I just got out of my work clothes and -" It was hard to explain something so straightforward. "And put something else on. I was going to the dining cavern."

"Really?" He said mildly, a slight frown appearing. Unfortunately, there were two ways he could take that explanation... Better to address this now. "Did you just feel like looking nice, or are you hoping for company?"

Tey looked at the Weyrlingmaster with some uncertainty, not sure what was bothering him. "I think I always like to look nice," she said cautiously, "and I hope my family will be there. Some of them usually are."

Well, if she was hoping her family would be there, it didn't seem very likely that she was deliberately trying to attract someone. Still, she did look very nice in that dress... "I hope you have a chance to see them then. You are weyrbred, right?" Probably, if she was meeting them for dinner, but not necessarily.

"Oh, yes. My family have been here for generations. Not many of us Impress." She smiled, wrinkling her nose in an effort not to grin like an idiot at her pleasure in being one of the few who had.

He smiled for her. Weyrlings had such silly ideas of bravado sometimes.
"Then you're doubly lucky. Isleth is a fine green."

"Thank you. I shall tell them you said so." She hesitated and wondered if she was free to go or if the Weyrlingmaster had more questions to ask.

He could tell she was getting anxious to leave, and decided not to tarry her. But not without a warning. She was probably not _deliberately_
trying to attract someone, but it was a very nice dress... "Then I hope you have a good dinner, Tey. But I suggest that you stay near your family if they are in the dining hall. You really do look very nice in that dress, and I don't want to hear that some drunk forgot to pay attention to your weyrling knots and caused a problem with Isleth."

"Oh. Oh!" She felt herself colouring a little, though why she should feel embarrassed when the Weyrlingmaster was talking about somebody _else's_ behavior, she didn't know. "I'll be careful," she promised with a nod.

He saw the blush, and felt a small smile creep across his face.
Weyrlings. "Good." He said succinctly. "Have a good meal Tey."

"Yes, sir," she said automatically, though it could hardly have been an order. She hurried away before she could fine any other foolish thing to say in front of the Weyrlingmaster and hoped she wouldn't have to face him for a day or two.
