Work, work, all work

Writers: AmajoS, Paula
Date Posted: 1st October 2007

Characters: Corowal, Umarc
Description: Corowal deals with some hold-matters with his assitant steward.
Location: Emerald Falls Hold
Date: month 6, day 8 of Turn 4

"Get in", Corowal called when he head the knock from his office door.
The door opened and one of his assistant stewards stepped in, carrying an arm load of hiderecords.

"Today's work, I presume," The lord holder remarked.

"Indeed, Lord Holder," Urmarc replied, trying to disguise his nervousness by acting in as proper a manner as possible. He was the newest of the assistant stewards and this would be the first time he would work completely one on one with the Lord Holder.

"What's in there today, Urmarc?" Corowal asked. If there was one more letter from a holder or Lord holder who was offering his daughter or sister in marriage to him, he was going to scream!

"The first thing, my Lord, is a petition from two Small Holders who're disputing over where exactly the border between their two territories lie," the assistant steward handed one of the hides to the Lord Holder along with a scroll, which when unfurled revealed a map of the area in question with each man's idea of where the border was drawn out.

"Hhmm," Corowal studied the map. "Is there copy of the original holding contracts somewhere? They usually define the borders." Althoug some of those contracts were very vague.

"I took the liberty, Lord Corowal, to locate the contracts for you.
However, the wording is a bit obtuse." He handed another set of scrolled hides to the Lord Holder.

"Obtuse?" Corowal said after he had studied the scrolls, "I think the scribe must have been sleeping." He looked the map again and compared it to the texts in scrolls. "There seems to be a small brook in middle of disputed area. It's a logical, clear border line and pretty much gives both as much land as the other has."

Urmarc noted the stream the Lord Holder indicated and nodded, "It would certainly make things clearer, my Lord. Should I have new contracts written up for you then?" He pulled a small stick of graphite and a paper pad from his pocket and prepared to take a note.

"Yes," Corowal nodded.

Urmarc nodded and jotted down the instruction. "Very good, Lord Corowal." That done he shifted out a bound stack of both paper and parchment which had been arranged by the Hold's Steward earlier that day. Letters regarding tithes and other business were on top, and more personal correspondance - including several letters of introduction tendered on behalf of various Ladies. "And here, my Lord, are several peices of correspondance which have been sorted according to urgency."

"Anything interesting there?" Corowal asked.

"I was told to warn you about the last three, Lord Corowal." The young assistant stewart shifted a bit, uncomfortably, hoping the Lord Holder wouldn't ask for details. Informing one's Lord Holder that he was being propositioned was not enjoyable. "The two on top though are good news though, my Lord."

"Uh-huh," Corowal sighed. Out of curiousity he picked up the mentioned three and read them. "Whoops, they seems to got misfiled," he grinned wickedly when he crumbled them and tossed into a waste bin. "People seem to think I've grieved long enough after my wife's death," he remarked.

"People often stick their noses where they don't belong, if I may say so, Lord Corowal." Urmarc commented.

"Well said, " Corowal chuckled. He picked up first of the important letters. It was about a trade agreement he had been trying to form with one of the neighbouring holds. "This needs an immediate answer.
Write it down while I dictate, please."
