Pretty Things

Writers: Yvonne
Date Posted: 11th September 2007

Characters: Zanen, Thalia
Description: Zanen stops by to admire Thalia's garden and offers to get her pretty rocks.
Location: Garnet Valley Hold
Date: month 5, day 19 of Turn 4

Zanen strolled down the path, hoping this wouldn't be seen as an intrusion. He stopped near the woman kneeling in the dirt. "Good morning, Lady Thalia. I heard about your garden and I had to come see for myself."

Thalia straightened from where she'd been bent over a bush, a basket of pink flowers in one hand and a delicate pair of gold-handled shears in the other, but didn't rise. If he approached her in her garden, then he had to expect some informality. Besides, she had dirty fingernails. "I do so hope that my garden lives up to your expectations, then, Hunter Zanen. I'm sure that you are quite the connaisseur of wild spaces."

"Yep." He looked around approvingly. "Sure does brighten up the place."

"I'm glad I have your approval, then! But I can hardly take all the credit - I had a lot of help." "Oh? From who?" Zanen asked.

"Well... Steward Penryn has been more than helpful, both in securing some of the more exotic plants for me, and in getting his hands all mucky helping me plant." That was earlier, of course. Before he'd married. "And Kiomo, who has been a very good sport about indulging my fancies. And a number of drudges who've moved trees and whatnot for me. It's been a group effort."

"If you need another hand, I'd be happy to help out," the hunter offered. "I don't have the same way with plants as I do with animals, but I can easily take direction." He smiled at her.

"So many people interested in gardening!" Thalia smiled, bemused.
"I'm going to have to build a bigger garden next turn to accomidate everyone who wishes to lend a hand! But thank you for offering, Zanen. It is very kind of you, and I'm sure that I'll send for you to move shrubberies or something for me shortly. Or maybe rocks."

Zanen laughed. "Rocks I can definitely handle."

"I'm thinking of putting in a rock garden, or at least a few decorative boulders. I only have to go out for a ride and flag a few that I want." She sighed. "It's so hard. There are so many unpleasant looking rocks on Pern."

"Oh, I think there are quite a few very nice looking rocks. You just need to keep your eyes open."

"Oh? Well then, you ought to prove me wrong by bringing me the next suitable rock for my garden that you see, and we'll see if our idea of what constitutes a pretty rock matches."

The hunter smiled. "I'll remember that, Lady Thalia. I'll see what I can find on my walk later today."

"I do like the ones with sparkles in them. Especially the pink ones."
Thalia batted her eyelashes at him - if he wanted to find boulders for her, then who was she to discourage him?

"Pink ones?" Zanen chuckled. "I think I might have seen a few around.
And I might wander down to the smith hall tomorrow. The stuff they cast off is very nice. It should be acceptable enough for even your lovely garden."

"Well. I hadn't thought of that." Perhaps she'd misjudged the hunter.
Skinning dead animals might not have dulled his aesthetic taste after all. "I'd be much obliged, then."

"My pleasure, Lady Thalia."
