Almonteo

Almonteo

"I hear you have been known to write some music, Journeyman Tarney," the Hallmaster said as he walked towards the young man sitting out in the afternoon sun.

Tarney was a bit startled by the voice that so suddenly pulled him from his thoughts. "Then you have heard correctly, Hallmaster." Luckily, he recovered quickly.

"And I hear you were raised in the Weyr as well?"

"Correct as usual." Hallmaster Almonteo was up to something. Tarney had been up to enough 'somethings' of his own to know when someone else was working on one. "May I ask why I so interest you today?"

"Because I was wondering if I might ask you to put your skills to work for me." Almonteo smiled. "We will be moving to our new home in the Weyr soon. I thought it would be appropriet to have a new piece to perform on the night of our welcome. And who better to write it than one who has known life in both the Hall and the Weyr?"

Tarney didn't know quite what to say; of course, he had composed a few pieces on his own, but he had never undertaken such an important task.
"Are you sure you want _me_ do write something? You wouldn't prefer someone - or someones - more qualified?"

"I'm not asking you to compose an entire _symphony_ and it would probably be better if you keep it down to only a few instruments. We will need it within the next two or three seven-days. The sooner the better so there is time to practice." The Hallmaster gave him a confident smile. "But yes, I want _you_ to write something."

"All- All right." He smiled brightly with as much confidence as he could muster. "I would love to, Hallmaster."

The older man nodded. He knew he was pushing the jounreyman a bit, but a good push now and then was good. "Of course, if you could keep me updated on your progress that would be great. And I am avaible for advice and honest opinions anytime you feel the need."

"Of course - and you can count on my needing it." Tarney was starting to get excited. He pracically jumped up from his seat. "I suppose I'd better get started!"

"I'm glad to see you're excited, son." He gave the young journeyman a clap on the shoulder. "Would you be comfortable playing an instrument for it?"

Tarney felt his eyes pop out of his head. "Play, too?"

The Hallmaster nodded. "If you think you are up to it. What instrument do you specialize in?"

"Gitar?" He could have killed himself - it wasn't a question. He _knew_
he specialized in gitar. Stupid nerves. "Gitar." He corrected himself after clearing his throat.

"Well, we don't have much time to prepare. If you can play an instrument I think that will speed things along nicely." The Hallmaster's eye held a hinting gleam. "And I can play the pipes if there is a part for it."

"Then you can count on there being one!" If Tarney hadn't been nervous before, he certainly was now that that Hallmaster would be playing one of his pieces!

Almonteo was pleased at the thought of being able to play in an ensamble again. He was usually too busy, but he would find the time to practice.
"Well, the dragons will be here day eight. I would be a happy Hallmaster if there was at least a rough tune laid down to paper by then."

"I will give it my every effort." He swore solemnly.

"Good then," the Hallmaster gave him one more smile. "You know where my office is if you need me. I will leave you to stew in your creative juices."

"Thank you, Hallmaster. I can't tell you how much this means to me."

"I am pretty sure it will mean a lot to our new neighbors as well." He Hallmaster gave the young man another pat on the shoulder as he walked back towards his office, confident that he had found the right composer for the job.
