Characters: Jilynn, Carlan
Description: Jilynn speaks to Carlan about two new students who will be coming
to the Hold
Location: Garnet Valley Hold
Date: month 4, day 25 of Turn 4
Notes: Mentioned: Nikanna
Notes: This actually follows a post where Jilynn is promoted to
Headwoman, but that one has been held up due to LIA so this is posting
first.
Having come to the garden to check on some special herbs, Jilynn noticed
Carlan when he entered. She had been meaning to speak with the harper and
decided that there was no time like the present so she dusted off her
hands and gave him a wave, "Harper Carlan."
"Ma'am," he said formally.
The headwoman gave him a smile, "How are Nikanna and little Ryannae
doing?" she asked, hoping the personal question would put him at ease.
She didn't know the harper well. Though they had met and seen each other
about, she had no children in harper classes any more and until recently
her domain had been primarily the kitchens.
"Nikanna is doing well, and Ryannae is blooming, I think she may start
walking soon."
Jilynn shook her head, "They grow so fast. I'm glad to hear that they are
both doing well. And your classes? The students aren't giving you too
much trouble I hope?"
"They're good kids mainly. Some are a little cheeky, but none of them are
disruptive."
"Well, I've been wanting to talk to you or one of the other Harpers about
two new additions that you'll be having to your classes soon. My niece and
nephew are coming to stay for an extended period," Jilynn didn't think
she needed to say that the arrangement was most likely permanent. The
healer's prognosis for her sister's failing health was not good. "Surea
is just barely eleven turns and Gurdon only eight."
"I see," Carlan nodded. "Will they be bringing reports from their previous
classes? It will help me and the other Harpers slot them in to the correct
groups."
"Oh, yes, I told them to be certain to bring those. It's been some time
since I have seen them, but I understand that they are both bright
children although by all reports Gurdon's rather shy and he struggles a
bit with reading. Surea," here Jilynn sighed heavily, "Well, I guess
she's a bit too smart for her own good sometimes and has a way of finding
trouble. Not that she'll be allowed to get away with that here."
"Well we'll look at them when they get here. While they take a day or two
to settle in."
"That sounds good, I just wanted to give the Harpers a heads up that they
would be coming."
"It is appreciated," replied the young Harper. "I'm sure they'll fit right
in here."
"Oh, I'm sure they will. I know that Greaydon and myself had no trouble
settling in, of course this was his home as a boy. How about you? Was
the move here difficult or not so much for you?"
"It happened a little 'faster' than we intended." It had been a n hasty
move, and he was sure that most of the Hold knew why, given that Nikanna's
father had disapproved of him as a husband so much that they had been
forced to leave to get married.
"Understandably so," she nodded, having heard of the Harper's
circumstances. "But it seems you and Nikanna have established yourselves
quite nicely here."
"Yes, we have. Garnet Valley feels like home at last."
"To me as well. Don't you go spreading it around, but I was some
concerned when we first came. Having raised my children elsewhere, I was
worried this would never be home, but sure enough it has become just
that."
"We like it here, I don't think we'd ever go back to Sapphire Meadows now."
"Garnet Valley is a good place to call home," Jilynn agreed.
