Kiala glanced around nervously. She had received a message this morning that it was time for her to go to Dolphin Cove Weyr for the Hatching that was going to take place in a sevenday. She still didn't know how she felt about Impressing at another Weyr and leaving all of her friends behind, but she knew she also had to represent Dragonsfall Weyr to the utmost. She hefted her sack higher on her shoulder and looked around. Not many people were up and about at this hour, which suited her just fine. She noticed Gilsha, a greenrider, walking towards her and smiled a bit. In seven days, would that be her? Would she be a greenrider just like the one walking towards her. She nodded at Gilsha and said, "Good morning Gilsha. Are you taking me to Dolphin Cove Weyr this morning?"
"I'd say so," Gilsha nodded, trying not to scowl at the poor girl despite the fact that it was _way_ to early to be pleasant. Course it wasn't the girls fault for the timing, but if she got a hold of the Weyrlingmaster, she just might castrate the man! "Is that your gear then?"
"Yes ma'am, ready and accounted for," Kiala replied. She noticed that Gilsha didn't seem to be quite the morning person that she was, but no matter. She just wouldn't let her nervousness turn her into a chattering idiot. "Did you want to eat first, or are we going straight to Dolphin Cove?"
Oh shards, that sounded good! "I'd love a cup of klah, if you're not too anxious."
"Honestly, I haven't had a chance to go by the dining area at all this morning, so I don't mind at all," Kiala replied and grinned. "I could use some klah and a quick bite to eat, so let's go there first." Kiala headed off, leading the way.
Well, that girl seemed to have an almost annoying level of energy for so early in the morning. But hey, if she could get some klah and breakfast into her before facing the cold of /between/, so much the better! "Are you looking forward to going to Dolphin Cove then?" Gilsha asked, falling into step with her.
"Well, honestly, I'm just going because the Weyrlingmaster told me that all older Candidates are needed to Stand there from Dragonsfall. I'm also to Stand at River Bluff Weyr's Hatching if nothing happens at Dragon Cove. Obviously, if I don't Impress at either place I'll come back here for the next Hatching here. Hopefully I'll get lucky somewhere," Kiala replied as they walked to the dining area.
"You'll get to meet a lot of interesting people there, though. Right?" Gilsha had always liked meeting new people and going to new places. She rarely had the chance now that she was stuck in a Weyr.
"Oh definitely. I will get to meet a lot of new people, which is always nice. I guess I'm just nervous to Impress when it all comes down to it," Kiala replied. "Do you know anyone at Dolphin Cove?"
"Oh I'm sure I've met _someone_," Gilsha shrugged. "I can't say I remember anyone from there, though." At least she hoped no one remembered her...
"Oh okay. I was hoping there was someone I could start with at least,"
Kiala replied and grabbed a cup of klah and loaded food on her plate. She headed towards a semi quiet spot and put the food down, looking up to make sure Gilsha was behind her.
The greenrider was only a step behind. "Well, I doubt you'd want to make any of my acquaintances anyway. Besides, you won't be alone. There are other Dragonsfall candidates who will be there with you."
"True, true," Kiala replied and took a bite of breakfast and then a sip of klah. "At least there will be someone I know. And you're right, I do need to take advantage of being able to meet new people."
"Especially if you Impress," Gilsha nodded. "You'll be on your own then."
"Yep, I sure will," Kiala replied and swallowed another bite. "I'm sure everything will be okay though."
"Oh, I'm sure of it." Gilsha gulped down half her mug of klah in one long pull. Shards, she needed that!
Kiala followed suit, gulping down her klah. She finished up her food in a few quick bites and sat sipping the rest of her klah. "So did you Impress here at Dragonsfall?"
"No. I've only lived here a few months now." Luckily the time she did at Telgar had prepared her for the crappy weather!
"Oh, so do you like living here now?" Kiala asked.
"Eh," the greenrider shrugged. "If I have to live in a Weyr, I suppose I could do worse."
Kiala laughed. "Well, I suppose that's one way to look at it."
"Well, I speak from experience." Being assimilated back into Weyr life hadn't exactly been a pleasant experience.
"What kind of experience?" Kiala asked, eying Gilsha.
"I've lived in other Weyrs before. Weyrs that were much more strict and were lead by complete idiots with no evidence of any talent of leadership whatsoever except they flew Thread with a bronze or gold between their legs." Gilsha had certainly not endeared herself to the Telgar Weyr leadership, and there was no love lost in the least.
"Well, at least it's better here, right? I mean, I wouldn't know firsthand since I don't fly in the wings, but it seems ok," Kiala replied.
"Oh yeah. No complaints." At least not so far. "My wingleader has a bit of a stick up his butt, but really I've seen much worse."
Kiala laughed. "Sounds like fun then. Does he just take his job seriously or what?"
"Yeah, he thinks he knows everything. But what bronzerider doesn't, right?" Could be worse. Could be N'vanik leading the wing! That would be... interesting...
"True, most bronzeriders I've talked to seem very serious. A few seem to have a good sense of humor, but I think most are so focused on being a bronzerider that it leaves little room for anything else," Kiala replied.
Gilsha snorted. "I think they have their mind on their 'little bronzerider' if you know what I mean. And most of them really don't have much reason to be so proud."
Kiala practically spit out the klah she had just taken a sip of. As soon as she was able to swallow it without choking, she went into gales of laughter. "Little bronzerider? I've never heard the male's anatomy referred to in that way!"
"Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't realize you were Holdbred." Either that or she was a rather innocent Weyrbrat...
Kiala laughed again. "Well, I was at one point, although I've been living in the Weyr now for a few turns. I suppose I just don't get to hear all the really good stuff."
Gilsha smiled. Give it time. "Keep your ears open. You'll learn a thing or two yet."
"Gotcha," Kiala said and smiled. "Well, should we be heading out?"
Gilsha nodded as she downed the rest of her cup of klah. "Right. Off we go then."
