"Yes, right there is fine," Erassa said, pointing to the corner of the room. "Thank you," she smiled gratefully at one of men who were moving both her and her son, as well as the new Lord Holder's family into the new rooms readied for them. Her smile then turned on Corowal standing
in the door. "That's the last one."
"Good. Look's homely," Corowal replied with a look around. "Do you need anything more?"
Erassa placed her hands on her hips as she looked around the cluttered space. "Need? No... But I wouldn't mind a rocking chair..."
"Then you shall have one," Corowal promised.
"If there's a spare, that would be nice," she said, feeling somewhat embarrased at having the new Lord Holder grant her wishes on a whim. It was certainly a change. She wasn't sure she was that comfortable with the idea. "Perhaps I should make a fresh pot of klah for the men
helping... us... move."
Corowal watched her with amused expression. She had lot to getting used to. She was now a milkmother for a Lord Holder's daughter.
Erassa shifted uncomfortably under his gaze. Shards, why was he just looking at her like that? "So shall I make some klah for you, too?"
"Don't bother, I can still get my on klah," Corowal replied. "You're not a servant," he reminded her.
She bit her lip thoughtfully. Finally she asked softly, "Then what exactly am I?"
"A milkmother and a fostermother for Lord Holder's children" Corowal replied. "That is quite a position. I presume you will be facing some snide, jelous remarks," he continued, well knowing the human nature.
Erassa raised her chin, almost defiantly. "Words don't hurt me." At least, she was becoming accustomed to the whispers and looks directed towards her and her son.
"Good to hear," Corowal replied.
"But, you have no wife," she pointed out. "I will obviously be expected to perform some of the... womanly duties. Not _wifely_ of course, but cooking, cleaning. Is that right?"
Corowal's eyebrowns shot up. "Do you really think a lady holder doing any of that? There's drudges for those things. If I had a wife, she certainly wouldn't be _cleaning_. Well, maybe the children's messes. But that's called motherhood."
"Yes, but sir," Erassa said calmly, though her fingers grabed a fold of her skirt, "I am not your Lady Holder. Nor would I ever be."
"Nor are you a drudge. You have rather intriguing position, between everything. Lower that Lady's but certainly above an ordinary servant," Corowal said.
Which she was sure the other ladies were just going to _love_ - she, the whore mother of a bastard son... Being just a servant was much easier to hide behind. "I understand, sir."
Corowal rather doupted she would. But only time would tell how she handled it.
