Description: R'syl and Usaeth argue about his plans for the evening.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 4, day 18 of Turn 4
R'syl sighed, straightening with small pops as his back realigned from his slouch. He rubbed the back of his neck absently, looking at the setting sun outside his window, staining the sky with varying shades of red. It had been a long day. Classes had gone well, but one of the blues had managed to hurt himself, and his crying had upset the entire barracks.
He stretched, looking out the window of his office again and then back to the pile of hides on his desk. He'd already filled out the daily reports and the ones for the blue's injury, but it still left the other stuff to be dealt with. He debated with himself for a moment, knowing what the answer would be.
}:No.:{ He started out of his thoughts, surprised by Usaeth's flat refusal and wondering if he'd overheard half of a conversation the bronze might be having with another dragon. **No, what?**
The bronze's voice was firm. }:You will not work more. You need out, and I wish to hunt.:{
**You're hungry?** R'syl was surprised, and vaguely amused at his dragons decisive tone. **But you ate two days ago.**
}:I wish to hunt.:{ Usaeth said loftily. }:And you can eat too.:{ He added pointedly. R'syl could almost see the dragon glaring at him in his mind.
More to annoy the bronze than to really argue, R'syl pointed out **You don't need to have me there while you hunt, and I intended to have food delivered.**
}:No.:{ Usaeth was firm. }:Work will wait.:{ The amusement was starting to wear off. "I need to get this done, Usaeth.
The reports won't write themselves."
}:Write them tomorrow. Now I wish to hunt. And you need to eat.:{ The bronze commanded. R'syl frowned. It was one thing when Usaeth suggested he do things that he knew he should be doing. It was another when he commanded him to do them.
**I'll join you while you hunt.** He allowed grudgingly, starting towards the door. **But after that-**
}:You will eat.:{ The bronze repeated with the same command to his tone that he used on reluctant weyrlings, a comparison that made his rider bristle. }:And you will talk to someone, and you will sleep. If a young one does not need you're help.:{ He added diplomatically. Even Usaeth had to allow for that possibility, since it happened almost every other night for one reason or another.
**Why should I?** R'syl demanded irritably, closing the door to his office.
}:Because you need to, and I want to hunt.:{ Usaeth was unpeturbed.
**Since when do you know everything about me?** He grumped. He was loseing, and he knew it. It was a pathetically weak argument to use on a dragon, and he realized he must be tired if he was letting Usaeth affect him like this. The thought didn't endure him any. It was like being married again...
}:Since the day my shell cracked and I knew you were mine.:{ Usaeth said warmly, sending feelings of love and reassurance to counter the old pang of sadness that had come with the reminder of Masair. }:I love you.:{ Usaeth seemed to take on many of the mannerisms of Masair at times. R'syl supposed it was only natural, since his dragon had known her for a dozen years before her death, and had been as much her friend as his it seemed.
A family dragon. He remembered handing up a squirming Sairros to her so they could go on an outing together with the children. They had all been so happy then.
}:I love you.:{ Usaeth said softly. }:You are mine.:{
**I know, Usaeth.** He sighed. **But so was she. They all were.**
}:I am not gone.:{ Usaeth said encouragingly. R'syl turned a corridor, and emerged into the fading light of the bowl. Automatically he turned, and saw Usaeth gliding towards him. }:I am here. I will always be here. And now we will hunt.:{ The bronze's tone was so pragmatic that R'syl found himself chuckling unexpectedly, and he relented a bit now that he was out in the evening air.
"All right. Now we will hunt."
