**You need to keep still just a moment longer.** The greenrider reached up with
the long handled brush she was using to finish scrubbing at a spot high up on the
dragon's back. **There, now you go rinse off, and then I'll oil you.**
The dragon did as she was bid, leaving her rider to take a step or two back from
the lake's edge.
"You dragon follows instruction very well." Taia smiled as she watched the green
make for deeper waters. The pup at her feet was straining to get loose from her
leash, "I wish this one would be as obedient."
"I think it takes time," said Hanni with a grin. "This one as a weyrling, well she
was almost impossible at times, wanting attention and more attention..."
"They're all like that." Taia grinned, "I'm just about to start training this
little one, if I intend on keeping her, I need to have her well behaved."
"I don't know a lot about canines. Runners though, that's a different matter."
"You have an interest in beastcrafting?" Taia asked.
Hanni pointed to her jacket laid on the ground with her gear. "Junior Apprentice
Beastcrafter, but I impressed before I could get too far."
"I should have guessed." Taia smiled, "There's not many young girls who don't wish
they had a runner of their own, but you ended up with as slightly
different mount below you."
"And I'd not have it any other way now. Although I do miss Spark at times."
"Spark? Your runner?" Taia nodded, "You're not the first to have left one behind."
she glanced out at the green dragon rinsing herself off in the deeper water. "How
long did you study for, before being Searched?"
"A few months only, enough to know it was the craft for me."
"You could always develop your craft a little now. You would have spare time, and
we always have apprentices working in the beast cavern, you'd be welcome, I'm sure."
"I think I might have to try that soon. It'd be a shame to waste the knots totally."
Taia looked down to where the pup was currently wrapping herself around Taia's
legs, "It's never too late, it may take you a few turns to make any headway, but
you wouldn't be wearing apprentice knots forever, if you started your studies again."
"I can just see my father's face now. Dragonrider and crafter. Not the good little
wife he wanted me to be."
Taia laughed, "Do any of us live up to our parents expectations? Mine were the
opposite, expecting me to become a dragonrider, and here I am crafter and very
happy with my life, as you are in yours."
"And that's the main thing, isn't it."
"Yes, it is as far as I'm concerned." Taia gave a small laugh, "But you, your
parents are alright with you Impressing? I've known of some who don't want
anything further to do with their son or daughter after Impression."
"I, well I ran away to find my brother. Da disowned him after he impressed blue,
and tried to marry me to a man that was well over fifty turns. I said no way and
took off. Not heard from him since."
"Oh." Taia pulled a face, "So you're another one. It's not uncommon these days -
is it?"
"I wish it wasn't like this, sometimes I think I should go back, just once so that
he can see how truly happy I am here."
"Do you think it will make a difference? Going back I mean."
"Probably not, but I can dream about it."
"True." Taia felt a tug down at her feet. "I guess I really should start the
training for this one." she nodded down to the pup who was watching the dragons
out on the water. "Think on what I said, Hanni. Promise?"
"I will do." Maybe it was time to do something more with herself.
Taia nodded, "I'd better get a move on with this one, the first thing, teaching
her to sit - and be patient!" she grinned, "I'll see you later, Hanni!" she gave a
brief wave and walked off along the waters edge, the pup gambolling along at her side.
