R'syl smiled as he approached one of the younger members of his new
weyrlingstaff. Kustaava, Mindath's rider. They had done fairly well today,
and it was worth mentioning. Particularly since if he remembered
correctly, her records showed she had been a bit of an impatient
troublemaker. He didn't want her to become an early casualty when she did
enter the wings.

Ava rubbed fondly Mindath's muzzle. **You did well today,** she told her
lifemate. Drills were far more interesting now than the idea was to
perfect their skills so they could teach them to weyrlings.

"Hello, Kustaava." He said warmly. "Hello, Mindath. What did you think of
drills today?"

"I think they went well, sir," Kustaava replied, bit on guard. Her problem
wasn't that she couldn't do what was expected to do, it was her negative
attitude when taking orders and towards authority in general. After
getting rid of subjugative, abusive father, she was reluctant to let
anybody tell her what to do.

"They did." He agreed, patting Mindath's side. "And I thought you two did
especially well on the turns."

"Thank you," Ava replied proudly. "Mindath is very agile."

"She is." He nodded. "But I do have a suggestion for you. I noticed you
seemed to be having a problem keeping your grip on the sacks when she
banked." He said casually, making it clear it was just an observation. He
didn't want her to think it was something to panic over -yet. "You might
want to try shifting the bag slightly to the side as she banks." He
gestured quickly, demonstrating. "It moves the bag in line with the turn,
which helps you keep a hold of it until you can tie it off."

"Right, I see," Ava said as neutrally as she could. But inside was
seething. Were they always looking faults in her performances?

}: The sack did almost fall and it banged my ribs, :{ Mindath pointed out.

**I'm sorry about it, Mindy. I'll more careful for now on.**

He could tell from her face that she wasn't happy with his implied
criticism, even if it was just advice she would eventually figure out on
her own. But she wasn't arguing with him, so perhaps she was learning. Her
attitude reminded him somewhat of Oroma... "That was really all I
noticed." He assured her. "I think if you practice that a little, you'll
see what I mean."

"Yes, sir," Kustaava replied curtly. She felt it was safer to keep it
short, otherwise she might say something she would regret.

He raised an eyebrow at her tone, feeling a pang of sadness. Yes,
definitely like Oroma. But Oroma had not lived long enough to learn the
little trick he'd shown Kustaava... "There's no point getting upset,
Kustaava." He said calmly, but a little gentler than he'd intended, being
unable to quite hide his sorrow at the memory of his lost daughter. "You
and Mindath did very well today. I think when you're ready, you'll make a
fine addition to the wings."

"You really think so?" Kustaava asked, sounding both uncertain and
hopeful.

"Yes, I do." He said firmly.

"Thank you, sir," Ava's voice was more warmer and it had lost it's guarded
tone.

"You're welcome." He said with a smile. "I'll let you two go clean up, and
then we have some weyrlings to teach. Assuming they haven't gotten into
mischief already." He amended, watching one of the other staff members
striding toward him. "I'll see you both later Kustaava, Mindath." He said
over his shoulder as he strode off.

"See you, sir," Ava replied and watched after him. "He really isn't so
bad," she decided, rubbing Mindath's eyeridge. Then she continued removing
the straps from green, so they could bathe.
