Sometimes it was better to write outdoors, in the fresh air and sunlight.
R'masu sat cross-legged with a worn hide, making notations here and there.
"Good morning, Wingleader," R'masu said with a nod as the man walked past him.

"Morning, R'masu. Working on such a fine morning?" U'das greeted jovially and asked. Curiously he stoped to see what exactly he was scribbling.

"A new song." The brownrider tilted the hide so U'das could get a look.

"Good for you. I couldn't do that. I can barely sing with the tune. I'm just not musical," U'das chuckled and shook his head. Most people just asked him to shut up when he started to sing.

R'masu smiled. "Everyone has their talents. Yours is leading a wing." "Well, it certainly isn't music," U'das grinned.

The brownrider chuckled. "Would you like to sit, Wingleader? I'm in a good mood, and I wouldn't mind sharing it for a few minutes." Good moods had been rare enough lately with the anniversary of the first Fall.

"Sure," U'das replied and sat down. "What kind of song you're working with, if I may ask?"

"Just a happy little tune. I may turn it into a dance song for Gathers."

"Now, dancing is something I can do, especially with the right lady," U'das said and grinned, giving the brownrider a playful wink.

"The right partner can make all the difference." R'masu returned the smile and fought against a pang of sadness. Saray had loved to dance.

"Yes, it does," U'das agreed and thought wistfully his late weyrmate. Shards, Selja had been a good dancer. Then he wondered if certain headwoman could dance.

"So will I see you dancing when I play this?"

"I hope so," U'das grinned.

The brownrider's eyebrow lifted. "And is there anyone I might see you dancing with?"

"I hope so," U'das' grin widened.

"That's good. I want to see lots of smiling faces!" It would help lift his spirits, even if it might only be for a little while.

"Don't we all," U'das remarked.

R'masu nodded. "So how has your day been, U'das?"

"The usual. Got up early, had breakfast, chatted with some friends, had drills and then hidework."

"I said _how_ has it been," the brownrider emphasized with a smile. "Good, bad, somewhere in between?"

"Between good and boring, accurate enough for you?" U'das said good-naturedly.

"I suppose I'll have to be satisfied with that," R'masu said.

"Yes, you have to. Unless you want me bore you to sleep with very detailed description," U'das said.

R'masu rubbed his chin. "Hmmm. It's a little too early for a nap."

"It worked when my children were young and I had to put them to bed."

The brownrider chuckled. "What a useful little trick!"
