"Bhervehan" Barthella said to get his attention as she came up behind him. "Can I have a moment? We have a problem."
Looking up from the brewing kettle he was cleaning, he saw on her face that this face not the trivial 'I burned the roast' kind of problem'.
"What is it, Bart?"
"My kitchen stores have been raided." She spoke bluntly, her distress evident in her voice. "Someone went in and stole several of my rarer herbs and spices."
Bhervehan tightened his grip on the towel he was using. "When?"
She pursed her lips in annoyance. "I'm not sure when. Two mornings ago I did inventory as always, but yesterday I didn't come in until evening since I had the morning off. I just came from inventory this morning and noticed them missing... so it could have happened anytime then."
*Shards and shells," he muttered under his breath. "About half the staff are locals we've never worked with aren't they?"
"Yes, but besides that incident with that boy coming in at all times for his shift, we seem to have a very good bunch." she defended. "I'd rather suspect somebody coming in the back than one of our own."
"As would I," he agreed. "The question is, what do we do about it and how do we stop it from happening again." With a slight smile he added, "a watch-weyr is not very practical for a spice rack."
Barthella smiled, but the situation wasn't very humourous. "I need those ingredients before our next shipment comes in. Is it okay with you if I go ask the Hall for some?"
"Of course, let me write a note to the Headwoman, we'll work out a trade of some sort."
She nodded, but she wasn't pleased. She didn't like to go begging only slightly less than being stolen from. "As far as happening again, maybe we need to hire another guard? From our back door, it would be easy to someone to sneak into stores, and I'd rather think that than one of our own people."
"Maybe, maybe. Before we pay for a new guard, maybe we can stake a canine in that back alley as well. Shards, but I am not happy about this.
We just opened?"
"It might work," Barthella agreed, "And it might be a isolated incident, some holdless person passing through?"
"Maybe," he said "but we are going to have people staying here and we are obliged to guarantee their safety as they sleep."
"Maybe it was one of the guests?" she tossed out the idea, then added.
"This is silly. I'm going to be suspecting _you_ before the end of the day if we keep this up."
"Nonsense," he said with a smile. "You know I never add any seasoning to your food."
She poked him playfully in the stomach. "That's because you're a smart man!"
"No, just wary of your revenge. Now, let me go see what I can do to keep us safe in our beds."
