"Where do you want this one?" Lynson asked, shifting the crate full of brandies carefully. They were well packed, a thick layer of straw betwen each bottle to prevent them from breaking, but one could never be too careful.
Bhervehan was leaning against the bar, looking over the plans for The Tavern, trying to figure out the placement of the chairs and tables that currently were all piled against the side wall.
"Huh? What have we here?"
"Brandy," Lynson replied, setting the crate down on a table. He pulled one of the slightly dusty bottles out and whistled. "Good ones too,"
he handed the bottle gently and showed Bhervehan the lable.
The Tavernmaster took the bottle and checked the lable. "Hmmm, yes. I remember this one. My Master distilled this when I was an apprentice. He whipped my hide when I mis-dated almost a dozen labels."
"I had a Master or two like that when I was an apprentice too," Lynson chuckled appreciatively.
"Didn't seem to hurt us any, did it?" Hefting the box, Bhervehan placed it back on the bar. "Could you, huh... help me here?"
"Of course," Lynson lifted the box of expensive bottles easily. "Just tell me where you'd like it." He didn't know why the older man always tried to lift things, that was one of the reasons he had so many apprentices and journeymen scrambling around helping after all. So he could just sit back and direct their actions. If he'd just do that!
"Under the counter behind the bar," Bhervehan said. "Follow me."
Leading the younger man, Bhervehan moved behind the bar, and opened a cabinet below the back counter.
Lynson set the box down carefully and began unloading the bottles of brandy setting them on the shelf the Tavern Master pointed to. He took note of some of the various bottles already stocked and grinned, "Looks like you're gearing up for quite the opening."
"This," he said, "is going to be The Tavern. Right in the shadow of Vintner Hall. We really can't allow it to ever be anything less that the best tavern on Pern. North or South."
"Sounds good," Lynson agreed with a nod. "The proximity certainly makes it easy to keep the best liquors and wines on stock." He thought of his own personal stock of wines - he'd lost a good number of his best bottles in the earthquake, but not all. Perhaps, when Bhervehan had worked through his current stores of wine, he might be interested.
Lynson made a mental note to return to the Tavern for business as well as pleasure, after it opened.
"I am planning for the more adventurous as well," Bhervehan continued.
"We both know that not all have the same taste, and most taverns need to serve a drinks that will appeal to the common taste. Here, we will be able to experiment. Try some more outrageous concoctions and see how they fare."
Lynson nodded, though he felt doubtful over such a thing. While he understood the advantages of blending, some of the best wines came from mixing the juices of different grapes after all, he didn't see the appeal of mixed beverages. He'd heard of people cutting gins and other liquors with various fruit juices and other liquids and thought it odd. Why ruin the flavor of a good gin like that? But then, if it wasn't wine, he didn't really pay much attention to it anyway.
"Well, you've got plenty to work with anyway." He loaded the last of the brandy into the cabinet and shut the door, grinning at the Tavern Master as he did so.
"That I do," he agreed. "And thank you for the help. If my daughter had caught me trying to move that, she'd strip my hide."
Lynson laughed, "Ah well, women have that way about them, don't they?"
He brushed his hands off as he stood, lifting the now empty box. "I'll go put this with the rest of the empties then." There was a wagon outside that had brought the crates of bottles and kegs to the Tavern from the Hall. Now it was mostly filled with empty crates as the alcohol and ciders slowly but surely made their way inside.
He'd enjoyed helping to set up the Tavern more than he'd thought he would, though he was definetly ready to get back to his vines.
