K'sedel

K'sedel

Shuffling the hides one more time didn't make it any easier, thought K'sedel as he reread some of the applications he'd received. M'galec had made it clear he didn't want the role, and after the scene he had caused with Lenala.... Well the less authority that man held the better.

**Nikornath?** he queried. **Can you please ask Tabanirth's if she has time to join me and review these?**

Tsaera wandered in a half candlemark later with a half-eaten bun in one hand and dark circles under her eyes. She collapsed into K'sedel's guest chair with a 'huff' and a smile. "So. Tabanirth tells me you've got a handful of folks who think they can replace J'an."

"She told you right," he said with a grin. "Several in fact, some are obvious 'no ways' but there are some promising maybes here."

She snorted. "Better them than M'galec. Don't bother with the obviously unsuitable - who are the maybes?"

"A'londet from Telgar," he passed the hide over with the man's application on it. "He's perhaps a little young, but this sounds good."

Tsaera took the hide and scanned it over. A'londet, twenty-nine turns old with fifteen of those as a dragonrider. 'Scored in the First Fall, his dragon was fit to fly but not to fly Thread, and as such he had been working with the weyrlings ever since. Formerly a Journeyman Tanner, and whose letter of recommendation was all strict and proper
-
but rather shy on details. "Either they don't want to let him go, or he's... not as great as he looks on paper," Tsaera said after a moment. "There's nothing about how he gets on with weyrlings or how he is, as a person. Patient, kind, brisk, plodding - what."

"But that's better than some I've seen. I'd put him on the bottom of the maybe pile because of it." He passed over another hide. "Sl'erak here is also another possible. He's the current Weyrlingmaster 'second at Far Island. His recommendation says he's patient with the youngsters, and gets on well with those who impress very young. But I'm not sure how he'd manage with some of the older ones here."

"Mmmm..." Tsaera said, thinking of Felarin- F'lin. He'd get along with anyone who wasn't M'galec. "I think I've met him. Once, briefly, when I was visiting B'nartil. He's a short little man with a huge grin. I remember liking him..." **...I think.**

"That might work," said K'sedel, leaning back in his chair. "Here are the rest of them, have a look and see if any jump out," he passed the small pile of hides over.

The Weyrwoman took a bite of her bun and settled back to read. It was kind of K'sedel to weed out the obviously unfit for her - just as he was in charge of promoting new Wingleaders, it was her responsibility to find a new Weyrlingmaster. But that was K'sedel - he did little things, without being asked, that made the lives of those around him a little easier. As she grew older, she'd started to value kindness over wit and craft.

Out of the batch, there were two that caught her eye: R'syl, most recently from Telgar Weyr, and O'sim, from Dragonsfall, then to Rising Moons Weyr and Windswept Islands Weyr. Both had served as Weyrlingmaster Seconds, although R'syl had more experience. He was also older by about seven turns, and had Impressed a little earlier than O'sim. She handed the hides for the two men back to K'sedel.
"Either one of them, I think. Both are experienced and both seem sensible. I'll write to them and go from there."

"Hmm..." K'sedel took the two and read through them again. "I'd go with this one first, see what he says." He passed the hide back over to Tsaera.

"Have you spoken to Lenala at all?" he asked, changing the subject.

"Lenala?" Tsaera was momentarily confused. _Should_ she have spoken to Lenala about something? Then she shook her head. "No, not seriously. I have been keeping an eye on her, though, and trying to keep her busy. I should have taken a greater interest in her from the start."

"Perhaps we all should have done just that," agreed K'sedel. "I really don't want to have to get called into another situation like that one again."

"No." Tsaera was quiet for a moment. "Thank you for handling it, however. I'm not sure if I'd have been quite as tactful. With either of them." It was hard enough that she wasn't overly fond of M'galec to begin with, she also thought that Lenala was rather childish and liked making excuses. Technically it was her duty to deal with rider disputes outside of Wing business. Sometimes she didn't mind giving that up.

"It needed it, emotions were running high enough as it was when I got there."

"Hmm." Emotions, and now gossip. Tsaera could only hope that it wouldn't be too damaging, for either Lenala or M'galec. And even if it was the pair's business, Tsaera still felt guilty. She should have done something sooner. With that in mind, it was her turn to change the subject. "How's your daughter?"

"Sleeping through finally, so now it's time to find her a good fostermother. Ciara is not looking forward to that at all." "No. I imagine not." Tsaera smiled. "But I'm sure that she'll be happy to return to a fighting Wing."

"As soon as a slot opens up, she's hoping to go back to Udas' wing."

"I know. She's been reminding me of it at least once every three days." Tsaera refrained from rolling her eyes - she was speaking with Ciara's weyrmate, after all. Instead she rose to her feet and picked up the hides. "I ought to let you get on with your evening, and write to the applicants before something else comes up. I'll let you know when they reply."

"Good, I'll look forward to meeting him."

"Whomever he may be!"
