A sharding meddler

Writers: Emma, Paula
Date Posted: 28th February 2007

Characters: Thanja, Eilomar
Description: Thanja catches Eilomar berating a female apprentice...
Location: Harper Hall
Date: month 2, day 5 of Turn 4

Thanja rounded the corner of the corridor, coming out through the doors into the sunlight outside the offices. She blinked for a moment, as her eyes adjusted, before beginning to head over to inspect some illustrations in the Printers workroom.

"You really don't belong here," Eilomar sneered at the apprentice. "You should go back to the kitchen where you do belong," he continued, ignoring the young girls tears.

"I beg your pardon," interrupted Thanja. "Might I have a word please Master Eilomar, now." The voice was calm, but that was because the girl didn't deserve any more, true, without having heard the whole conversation she didn't know the rights and wrongs of this situation, but she knew one thing.
That youngster did not deserve this, and in public.

"Of course, master Thanja," Eilomar replied, without second glance or thought towards the girl.

She led the Master Harper slightly away from the girl, before speaking. "I don't know what happened here," she began. "But nobody should be spoken to like that, especially in the state that poor girl is in."

"If she wants to be harper, she need to toughen up," Eilomar responded.
"Harpers don't weep. She obviously isn't cut for this."

"That isn't your decision to make, especially now."

"It should be," Eilomar muttered with low voice.

"I'm sorry," she said wondering if she had heard right. "What was that you said? You know that the Hallmaster has final say over who apprentices here or not."

Perhaps that girl might be better off as a Printer rather than a Harper for a while, at least she'd not have to deal with Master's that shared this man's attitude for a while. The junior apprentice classes were similar enough that several were taught together, or as optional classes for either craft.

"It was nothing," Eilomar replied with an uneasy cough.

"Perhaps you should let the young lady go back to her classes now,"
suggested Thanja, making a mental note to speak to Almonteo about Eilomar's attitude. Perhaps the Master Harper would respond better to the Hallmaster himself.

"She's better go," Eilomar agreed and turned to the girl. "Wipe you face and get off here. I believe you have classes to attend," he commanded her roughly.

Thanja watched as the girl scampered off. "Don't let me see that again," she said to Eilomar. "If you have problems with any of the young ladies here, come and speak to me first."

"I try to remember that," Eilomar said with quite unfriendly tone. He considered her a sharding meddler.

"Good." With those words, Thanja considered the discussion over.
