"You asked to see me Sir?" said the young greenrider as she knocked on the door of the Weyrlingmaster's office. It was going to take a bit of getting used to, but the last occupant, well the less said about him the better. It seemed that he used the office to sleep in, or drink in.
T'mahl was enganged in a much less entertaining activity. Hidework.
Too much was left undone by the previous Weyrlingmaster, and his successor was paying the price for it. "Yes, Demalia." He waved her in without looking up from his desk. Riffling through a stack he finally found the one he needed. "Please, come in and shut the door."
"Sir," she said closing the door gently behind her.
"Sit down," he said with a slight smile and a nod at the chair across from him.
She did as he asked, slight puzzled by the summons.
"Have you been enjoying your little bit of freedom now that the weyrlings have graduated?" T'mahl asked once she was settled.
"Yes. It's been very quiet though."
"That it has been," T'mahl nodded. "I'm sure you're used to all the weyrlings being around. You've been in the Weyrling wing for quite some time."
"Yes, I have."
"And that is exactly why I have asked you to come. I have been looking over your record with us." The Weyrlingmaster reached for it and began flipping through the pages. "It's quite good. You have shown great maturity, leadership ability and creativity."
And now thw greenrider was puzzled. "Sir, I don't understand."
"You've done well, Demalia. But its long overdue that you join a real wing and put your talents to good use." He wondered how she would take that news. Many riders who spent turns working as weyrling staff were excited to move up to a true wing. Other, such as himself, felt lonely and unsure. They felt important in the weyrling wing. Starting at the bottom again... For some it was a hard step to take.
"The Wings! Really!" The words were out of her mouth before she'd even really thought about it. All the weyrlings in her class had long since gone to the wings, and now it seemed that she would join them at last.
"The wings," she repeated.
T'mahl smiled. He was happy for her. It seemed this was a moment she had been looking forward to. "Not just any wing, Demalia. The Weyrleader's Wing."
"You're kidding me?" But one look at his face told her the truth there. "Weyrleader D'wrayt wanted me in his wing?" The Weyrlingmaster could understand her surprise, and appreciated her humility. "Like I said, Demalia, you've done well. You have great leadership skills and I suppose the Weyrleader hopes to help you develop them in his wing. It's a wonderful opportunity."
"It is. Mama and Papa will be so proud of me."
"As they should be," he nodded. "I truly hope that you will use the skills you've learned. A greenrider can make a great contribution to the wing."
"I hope I can do that."
"I know you will do us all proud," he nodded. Suddenly he felt as though everything that needed to be said had been said. Things could get uncomfortable if this drug out much further. "Well, I believe that's all, Demalia. You will be reporting to your new wing next sevenday."
"Thank you Sir."
"Yes, well, good luck."
