Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 13, day 12 of Turn 3
Harki yawned and ran a hand through her brilliantly dyed hair before replacing the pot of klah on the hook above the fire.
It was hot, and her finger slipped causing it to catch with a *clang*.
She cursed silently and checked to make sure that she hadn't spilled anything -
she hadn't, thankfully. Wouldn't that add insult to injury. When she turned back to the dining cavern she caught a greenrider staring, so she pursed her lips and picked up her klah. "What are you looking at?"
Maiz all but jumped. She hadn't been staring at the other girl, she had been staring off into space. Instead of explaining that, she said "Sorry," and lowered her eyes, concentrating a bit too hard on pouring a glass of juice.
"S'okay." Harki slipped onto the bench opposite Maiz.
"If I was bothered when people looked at me, I wouldn't look like this. It'd be kind of stupid."
"You have every right to look however you want," Maiz agreed. "And I wasn't purposely staring, I was just sort of staring off into space and you happened to be in the way."
The greenrider rolled her eyes. "You don't have to make excuses for it. I know I'm gorgeous." She fluffed her hair and toyed with her klah mug. "You weren't on Watch Duty, so why're you up so late when there's drills? You're in... J'nus' Wing, right?"
"Yes, I'm in J'nus' wing. And I should be sleeping, but I couldn't seem to drift off. Rather than lying in bed _not_
sleeping I figured I'd come and get a snack and some klah."
"Fair enough." Harki looked down at her own mug, then leaned in conspiratorially toward Maiz. "Hey - heard anything about U'kaiah getting his Wing back?"
"Not that I've heard," Maiz whispered back. "Shards it would be weird having him as my Wingleader!"
"What? Why!? U'kaiah's a sharding good Wingleader!
Better than stodgy old J'nus, anyway." The greenrider shook her head, feeling obligated to defend her friend. "And much better looking. An attractive Wingleader makes it easier to get out of bed in the morning."
"Oh, I mean no disrespect to him," the younger girl hastily said.
"We're friends. I hope he does get his Wingleadership back. Its would be just sort of strange going from being friends to him as my superior."
"You're friends with U'kaiah?" Harki snorted and took another sip of klah. Obviously she had to do some catching up with her wayward clutchmate. "Figures."
"What is that supposed to mean?" Maiz was offended. "Well, just _look_ at you!" Harki paused; Maiz obviously didn't get it. "You're gorgeous. Nice hair, green eyes... of course U'kaiah's friends with you. He likes pretty women."
"You think U'kaiah and I are sleeping together," the younger girl realized.
**Interestingly phrased.** She shrugged. "If you're not, give it time."
"We're just friends," Maiz stressed. "Mmm." Sure. For now. U'kaiah had always possessed an eye for women.
"What's your name?"
"Maiz."
"_Maze_?" Harki wasn't sure she'd heard her correctly.
"Close, but its _Maiz_." People had been making that exact mistake upon hearing her name all her life. "Oh. Uh, sorry. Maze." Harki couldn't hear the difference, and couldn't tell if it was herself being stupid, or the other greenrider was mocking her. She held out her hand. "It's always nice to meet one of U'kaiah's friends."
The young greenrider finished the last of her klah, then stood. "It was nice to meet you too. But for now, I'm off to bed."
"All right. Well, better luck this time," Harki said.
"You too," Maiz replied, as she left the dinning cavern
