Then It's Settled

Writers: Dana, Shelly
Date Posted: 5th September 2006

Characters: Traelyn, Corvera
Description: Traelyn visits the newest Weyrwoman and things don't go so well...
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 13, day 1 of Turn 3

There was a short rap on Corvera's door. She sighed and rubbed at her
neck, looking up from her hidework. It was a bit late for visitors, but
she'd learned quickly that weyr business hardly kept regular hours.

"Come." She called out, hiding the the annoyed tone in her voice expertly.

"My duty to you, Corvera," Traelyn said as she came in, plastering a
polite smile on her face as she closed the door. "And to Mnaiath, of
course." She'd decided that if she waited any longer to visit the new
Weyrwoman of Dragonsfall, it would be interpreted as a major
slight--something her reptutation could not afford to bear.

"And to you and Nyith!" She was moderately pleased to see Traelyn - they
had known each other well at Far Island and, at the moment, any reminders
of home were welcome. "What brings you here?"

Corvera's reaction surprised her. Maybe she was willing to forget their
history? At least for now? "You." Keeping her smile in place, she came
closer. "I wanted to see how you were holding up here. It's all so
different from Far Island..."

Determined to remain polite, Corvera ignored the fact that she was
_hardly_ the reason why Traelyn had chosen to visit. "And being Weyrwoman
is so different from being 'Second! But, of course, you know that, too.
Congratulations on Dolphin Cove."

Traelyn glanced at her warily before she'd managed to smooth the
expression over. Was that a jab? "Thank you. I hope you've been
settling here just fine? I know how...hard...transferring can be."

"I am. The riders here are very helpful and you left behind a very
faithful staff. I can tell many of them were very sorry to see you leave."

**You mean the men,** Traelyn thought sourly, knowing exactly just what
Corvera thought of her _and_ her infamous reputation. Shards--she'd never
be able to escape it, would she? First B'ram, and now this... Traelyn
managed to demurely incline her head--briefly. "Surely they've been
helping you settle?"

"Everyone's been very helpful!" Corvera decided to take a little chance to
validate the gossip she'd been hearing. "Especially your friend U'kaiah."

"Yes, he tends to be the helpful sort." And she wondered just what
Corvera meant by "helpful".

"Although, he hasn't had many opportunities to be helpful after his fight
with N'vanik." She put a special twist on the way she said N'vanik's name
that didn't imply anything in particular, but might just cause a reaction.

Traelyn's lip curled. Typical of Corvera. "I take it the pleasantries
are over?"

"I always intend to be cordial with you; you're a fellow Weyrwoman and
it's important to preserve a working relationship - I just don't see the
point in pretending. You've never liked me and I doubt that will change."

"Oh, undoubtedly." She ground her teeth, checking her temper. "But you
don't have to get nasty with your barbs, Corvera. In fact, you don't need
to make any at all. That way, we can preserve our 'working relationship'."

"Fine by me."

"Then it's settled." Sharding woman...
