Kapera

Kapera

Kapera strolled up to Corvera's office door and knocked. While she waited for the permission to come in, she stiffened her body, assuming an appropriate position for a subordinate reporting to a superior. **It should be me here!** she thought irritated, even as she knew she could never obtain the Weyrwoman position here- at least, not immediately.
Riyanth had risen too recently... She shook her head, for a moment allowing bitterness to fill her. Surely she was better than this woman.
Then she let her mask settle again as she waited to be called.

"Enter!" Corvera had just been getting ready to leave when she heard the knock. More than a little frustrated, she removed the light jacket she had put on against the cold and rehung it. This had better e important.

Kapera stepped in and analyzed the other woman briefly. "Weyrwoman," she said stiffly, "Kapera, rider of gold Riyanth, reporting in." No one could say she was shirking protocol here.

The Weyrwoman smiled briefly. "Corvera, lifemate to gold Mnaiath, my duties to Riyanth." She'd match her Weyrsecond move for move from the beginning. She'd seen too many Weyrseconds reign too freely in a weyr and she wasn't about to allow that happen to her. "Have a seat."

Kapera took a seat slowly. "I assumed that you would wish to see me immediately, Weyrwoman." she began. "Unless this is a bad time?"

"It's a busy weyr, Kapera, there's never a good time." She said briskly, but not unkindly. "But you'll discover all that in time. How are you settling so far?"

"Well, considering I just arrived." Kapera replied. "My things should be settled in soon, and I'm capable of beginning work as soon as you let me." Privately she hoped she didn't have to start immediately, she wanted to check out the place- and the people- first.

"You'll have a sevenday before your duties start. That should give you a chance to move your things in and to know the layout of the weyr. I don't want to overwhelm you too quickly."

Kapera nodded. "If I get settled in and feel completely comfortable before then, should I come to you and ask to begin early? I imagine your job isn't easy right now- I know the circumstances here have been bad."
She actually meant it. As much as she wanted to be Weyrwoman, she didn't like this- not with no second, no other goldriders there to share the duty but a weyrling... She decided she'd be willing to pitch in early.
"I could probably settle in and get the layout in 3 or 4 days." she offered.

Corvera gave a slight smile. "If you can get settled without rushing, then I suppose. But I know first hand that you can't try to speed through things. The post you're filling will be stressful enough from the beginning that if you don't have a solid base here, it could be a very difficult transition and I can't have that."

Kapera nodded. She adapted quite fast, not that she was going to share her secrets. "I understand there's a weyrling goldrider here, which one of us is going to be handling her training, or will we both?"

"That will primarily fall to you. I'll be handling some things with Teseada, but there's just a little too much work to get through at the moment to allow me to spend as much time as I'd like." Between the still missing kitchen drudge, Talryne's loss, and the upcoming Turn's End with all its chaos. "But I won't expect you to begin training her for a few sevendays yet. The weyrlings are busy with their jumps /between/ for the present."

Kapera nodded. "I understand. There's enough to worry about with /betweening/, I'm sure. Anything else you'd prefer to designate to me?
I'm not so good with figures," she had to admit, "but I'm not too bad with people." She could usually get what she- or the Weyr- wanted, though she suspected Corvera would want to handle the Lord and Ladies of the region.

Corvera had to give the woman credit, she certainly was trying to get her assignments early. "I'll outline your duties with you as soon as you've gotten adjusted to life here. No sense in telling you before you're really ready." She gave Kapera a genuinely sympathetic, if a little patronizing, look.

Kapera nodded. "Makes sense to me." she remarked, even as she inwardly thought that she could work immediately. Of course, the extra time to play was nice. "Is there anything else you think I need to know today?
Anything to watch out for?"

"Nothing major." Corvera waved a hand, dismissing the comment. "You'll learn the ropes for yourself easy enough. Do you have any questions?"

"No ma'am." Kapera replied. "I just want to help," she added, voice sounding sincere. "It can't be easy having come in for the Second job, then becoming Weyrwoman with only a weyrling to help. Just let me know if I can ever help you..." She let her voice trail off.

"No, it wasn't easy - but we both know that the life of a dragonrider isn't about 'easy.' But thank you for your offer. For the moment," she stood up and took her jacket from its resting place once more. "Calling it a night and heading back to our weyrs would be a wonderful place to start."

Kapera nodded and stood herself. "It was a pleasure to meet you, Corvera." she said with a smile, inwardly thinking she didn't really like this woman. "I look forward to working with you."

"And I with you." Things were off to a somewhat cold start, but Kapera seemedlike she'd at least be comitted to a working relationship. "Good night, Kapera."

"Good night, Corvera."
