Description: Maiz and her new Wingleader meet.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 13, day 9 of Turn 3
J'nus stared at the hide in his hand, having already read through it several times and still having no real sense of what to do with the transfer. Greenrider Maiz, from Vista Point Weyr. No marks against her. No glowing praise from previous Wingleaders.
Nothing... because she'd just graduated. Not that the bronzerider had issues with newly graduated wingriders, but rather with the fact that she had chosen to transfer Weyrs and move outside her comfort zone and away from the support of her peers before she'd even flown Thread once. It made him worry, and wonder why she'd been so anxious to leave.
}:She has made her choice, J'nus. She and Indyath are happier here than at Vista Point Weyr,:{ Kopth said suddenly. His rider frowned.
**Are you talking to Indyath now?**
}:I am,:{ J'nus looked back at the hide in his hand. **Tell her to ask her rider to meet me in my office, please, if she's not doing anything vital now.:{ The request certainly shouldn't have surprised Maiz, but she hadn't expected it for at least a few more days. As unpacking her things certainly didn't rank 'vital' she told Indyath to inform J'nus and his bronze that she would arrive in a few minutes.
On her way out the door the greenrider glanced in the mirror.
Deciding that good impressions were key, she ran to change from a skirt into trousers. A female rider she may be, but she wanted him to see her as a rider first, not female. A few minutes later, feeling properly attired and still a bit nervous, Maiz knocked on the Weyrleader's door. "Come in!" J'nus smiled and stood when he saw who it was. Maiz was young, with dark brown hair and a pretty shape. She moved with the nervous grace of someone on unfamiliar ground. He held out his hand in greeting. "You must be Miaz. I'm J'nus. It's a pleasure."
Maiz shook his hand, being extra certain not to be too timid about it a too-firm grip was always better than a limp one.
"Yes, I'm Maiz, rider of green Indyath. She wanted me to relay a greeting to you, if your bronze did not already do so on her behalf."
"He didn't, so thank you." Kopth tended to forget things like passing on greetings when his attention was focused on some pretty green.
"Please, sit down. I trust your weyr is to your liking?"
"Oh yes, its perfect. I've never had a space to myself, so anything at all would be wonderful."
The bronzerider smiled. "Good. Don't hesitate to ask the Headwoman if you do decide you need something else. That's what she's there for."
"I haven't met the Headwoman yet. But I'll be sure to look her up if I need anything." It somehow amazed her that the Wingleader was being so nice to her. It wasn't what she would have expected... but it certainly made her feel welcomed.
"Please do." J'nus picked up Miaz's file and glanced through it quickly, more out of habit than to remind himself what was in there.
"So, Miaz. You're fresh out of weyrlinghood, hmm?"
"Yes," she said, a little tentatively. She knew that the last thing most Wingleaders wanted to be saddled with was an unknown rider right out of weyrlinghood. "Indyath and I transferred here as soon as we graduated."
"So I see. This is a bit of an unusual situation, Miaz, simply because through your Weyrlinghood you'll have studied the Wing formations in your own Weyr." J'nus smiled slightly.
"Unfortunately, not only are you having to adjust to flying Thread, but you're going to have to relearn all your Wing formations as well.
_And_ adjust to a new Weyr. Which is why I'm going to ease you in slowly. Here are Cyan's current Wing formations," he pulled a thin sheaf of hides from the mess on the desk and handed it to her, "which I'll get you to study tonight. Cyan meets a half candlemark past dawn for drills, and I'd like you and Indyath to watch from the ground. We can go over any questions you might have about the formations over lunch, and then I'll get you to watch the afternoon's drills as well.
When you're confident with what you see, you can join us in the sky.
There's no rush."
"Okay," Maiz agreed, a bit tentatively. He didn't seem to confident about her abilities, which only made her doubt herself more. "I'll be certain to study these tonight."
J'nus smiled. "Good. I'm here to help you. And you're a dragonrider, Miaz - you'll do just fine, no matter what Weyr you're at."
"I hope so." She offered a tentative smile. "Of course you will." J'nus shook her hand when she left, and as she went he couldn't help but thinking, **Shards, but she's young...**
And now she was also his responsibility.
