Hallmaster Almonteo, Greetings to yourself and the Hall. I am writing to you regarding my status as a Student of Harper Hall. As you know, in the aftermath of the fire that devastated the Hall, I returned to my family in Emerald Falls. It is after much thought that I formally request permission to return to Harper Hall to continue my studies.

In the light of the recent change in policy, it is also my request to return to the Hall as an apprentice to the Harper Craft, rather than as a Student of general studies. For your convenience, enclosed you shall find copies of the records of my performance as a Student. In addition, I will be pleased to have ready any audition material you might require.

I look forward to your reply. Thank you for your time.

Almonteo scanned the records that she had provided. Impressive. It was hard to get such high praise from Master Mayon. He was notoriously strict. In fact all of her teachers had nothing but good things to say about the young woman. The Hallmaster wasted no time in tracking down each of her teachers in turn and asking their opinion on the girl before penning his reply.

Dear Alais -

I was most pleased to receive your letter and your request to join the Harper Hall as an apprentice. I have spoken to your former teachers, and they assure me that you would make a wonderful addition to our Hall.
I would like to invite you and your father to the Hall to discuss this further. I can arrange for a dragon to transport you both so we can discuss your apprenticing with us.

Your auditioning will not be necessary since so many of our staff are familiar with you and your abilities, however, you will need to go through a round of placement tests to see where you would fit best with the current classes.

If you would let me know a time convenient for both you and your father, we can arrange a meeting and discuss this further.

They were watching her as she read the letter, first silently, then aloud. Her mother was pale, one hand clutching the back of her father's chair as she stood behind it. Her father- he was smiling, bright blue eyes sparkling with unshed tears of pride.

"You truly want this, Alais?" Adreno had asked when she was done.

She looked at them, her parents, and nodded her head.

"Then we had better arrange a time to meet with Almonteo. Next sevenday sometime- if it is agreeable to him?" her father said, reaching up to hold her mother's hand that had moved to his shoulder.
She was smiling too, Alais saw. It was a picture of them that would remain with her for the rest of her days.

Hallmaster Almonteo, If it is convenient to you and the Hall, any time during the next sevenday would be acceptable for a meeting according to my father's schedule at the Hold Infirmary. Dragon transport would be most welcome, and our deepest thanks to the Weyr for their assistance.

I look forward to our meeting. Thank you again for all of your help.
