Description: Maiz, Gilsha Have a chat about men.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 12, day 15 of Turn 3
It was late and Maiz was feeling restless. Restless and lonely. Having a weyr to herself was strange. It just seemed so empty. **I need to get out of here,**
she informed Indyath. **I'm going to go to the dining cavern for some klah.**
Another greenrider had beat her to it. She looked up as the familiar young woman walked over to the table where the pitchers of klah were supposed to be. "I picked up the last one. They haven't brought out any fresh ones yet," she called over to the woman she had met once before. "Grab a mug, Maiz, and share a drink with me. Unless you're looking for more masculine company tonight."
"I've given up men. They're nothing but trouble," Maiz replied, coming over to join Gilsha, mug in hand. "I'm sure they say the same thing about us from time to time," Gilsha chuckled as she reached out to fill her mug with klah. "What made you swear off men?"
"The usual reasons I suppose," the younger greenrider said, shrugging her shoulders. "I suppose we all go through that at times," Gilsha agreed. "Trust me, though. You'll find a use for men again," she assured her with a wink.
Maiz rolled her eyes. "Oh, they have their uses. Like getting things that are too high for me to reach.
That's about the best thing any of them have going for them."
Her companion shrugged. "Flights wouldn't be the same without them, though."
"I wouldn't know. Indyath is only 6 months old and hasn't had her first flight yet."
"Ah, I see. Well, just wait. You'll see what I mean," Gilsha said with a knowing smile.
"I'm still not used to the idea of sleeping with a random stranger," Maiz admitted. "Have a hard time shaking hold-bred morals in that area." Gilsha had been nervous before her first flight too. She didn't know many greenriders who weren't. "When a flight happens, trust me, you won't even worry about who it is or why you're doing what you're doing. It just... happens. And you don't have to stay with the man if you don't want to. You can leave any time."
Maiz half-smiled. "I know all that. But I can just imagine how awkward the next morning can be... waking up next to someone you don't know, or at least didn't intend to know in such an intimate way. I just won't know what to say or how to act."
"It is a little awkward, and I suppose that never really goes away," the more experienced greenrider admitted. "But if its too much, you can go. If you're curious, there's no harm in staying. After all, you'll still be feeling the residual flight lust, and so will he. So you can either go home and take a cold bath, or stay a while and see what happens. Its completely up to you."
"You make it sound so simple."
Gilsha shrugged. "As in most things, its as simple, as stressful, as annoying or frightening as you make it."
"I suppose that's true. I just manage to make everything as difficult as it could possibly be," Maiz smiled sardonically.
"I've noticed most people do," her companion smiled and refilled both their cups. "Don't worry about it so."
"I'll try not to," Maiz promised. "I've monopolized this whole conversation! I'm sorry."
"Well, I'm pretty sure I heard my own voice piping in there from time to time," Gilsha smiled. "But if you want to talk about something else we sure can."
"I just meant that the entire subject was about me.
For all I know you have a wonderful weyrmate, and here I am swearing off men!"
"No, no weyrmate. No particular man in my life at all, in fact. I'm new too, after all." And she definitely wasn't looking to jump into any relationship.
"Its strange being new to a place. It hasn't happened in so long that I feel like I've always lived in one place and then have changed suddenly."
"There's nothing wrong with change. Its a new beginning."
