Something To Do

Characters: Daigoro, Catriana
Description: Daigoro asks Cat for a little bit of help...
Location: Vintner Hall
Date: month 12, day 20 of Turn 3

She was about ready to hurl her crutches across the room. With a sigh of frustration, she sank down instead into a chair and let the crutches fall where they would. Catriana closed her eyes. It was so _hard_ being helpless like this, especially for someone who was used to being useful and used to doing everything for herself.

She still hadn't gotten the hang of moving about with these...these...things. Her brother had helped a bit, adding some padding to them so the crutches didn't hurt so much. He'd teased her, but good-naturedly. She'd almost thrown the crutches at him too.
_That_ was how frustrated she was. She'd never have even thought of doing such a thing under ordinary circumstances.

Lucky for her, the Hallsecond chose that moment to walk in, rather large box in hand. "Cat, can I use you to help me for a while?"

"Daigoro!" she said, surprised. "I...sure. What do you need me to do?"

"This is a box full of papers that were written by all manner of people.
Some helpful soul decided it would be useful to throw all the papers into the same box. We have apprentice, journeyman, and master papers all mixed up," Daigoro said with a weary sigh. "We need to split them up and return them to the right places. Do you think you could do that?"

"I...I...think so..." Craft papers? Oh...shards...surely he realized she'd have to actually _read_ them in order to put them back in order.
She hardly dared to breathe.

"This is going to be a long and tedious task, I'm afraid," Daigoro sighed.

"I'm...just glad of the distraction. Any distraction," she was very, very careful to keep the excitement out of her voice and her expression neutral.

"Well, I don't know if it will be more distraction or torture," the Hallsecond chuckled. "Its all a bunch of dry Vintner talk."

"Pun intended?" Cat asked, one brow arched slightly. "I'll do my best to suffer through it, just because you asked, sir, and I know that there's a lot of work to be done. I don't mind being useful."

"I would appreciate it," Daigoro nodded. "So we need them separated by rank and topic if possible. At least into the different sections for the Masters and Journeymen - Brewery, Wines, Liquors, Ciders, Distillers. Do you know the difference?"

He had asked her to do this. He had _asked_ her. Briefly, the thought crossed her mind that she ought to lie. But Daigoro had asked her to help with this. "I think I can figure it out, based on the text and subject matter. The processes are different enough it shouldn't be too difficult to sort the papers out."

"See, I knew you were the right girl for the job," the brewer grinned.
"All right, I'll bring the other boxes in here for you."

"How...many are there?" Oh...just think how much information was contained on those pages! A wealth of craft knowledge. This was almost a dream come true.

"Four that I know of. We don't need it right away," he assured her.
"Take your time."

"It might take some time to get through all this. Especially if it's as...dry...as you say," Cat said lightly.

Daigoro nodded. He couldn't expect she would find soil composition and vine growth all that interesting. "That's fine. Take your time."

"I...thank you, Daigoro. For this project. It...makes me feel useful again." It wasn't all she was thanking him for, but some things could never be said aloud, not in the world as it was.

"Well, I promised you I'd find something, didn't I?" he smiled.

"You did, Sir. And this is certainly something."
