**What do you think he wants, Tey?** H'kami thought, even as he ambled toward the Wingleader’s office.
}:I do not know.:{ the brown responded. }:Perhaps he wishes to praise your efforts.:{
H'kami snorted. **We've only been here a few weeks, Tey. I don't even know half the Wing gossip yet.**
He reached the door, then, and knocked.
“Come in. Ah, H’kami, thank you for stopping by.” A’brevan gestured to the chair to invite him to sit down. “I wanted to ask you how you were settling into the wing?”
The office was tidy, reports filed away on a bookshelf behind the desk, and his desk was mostly bare save for some paper and a few pens, and a little green firelizard napping near where A’brevan’s arm rested.
H'kami obliged, slouched into the indicated chair and offered his Wingleader a cheerful grin. “Do you want me to start with the part where me and Teyrabth are finally used to freezing half to death, or were you talking more in general?” He asked. “By the way, congratulations on the official promotion, sir. And nice firelizard-- she's a cutie.”
“Thank you. I hope to serve the Wing well,” A’brevan said sincerely. “Listen, if you’re cold now, you might want to reconsider the move. We don’t get the blizzards until month six usually. Do you ski? What did bring you to our lovely Weyr?”
“After I've finally started settling in? No thanks.” H'kami shook his head. “Besides. It's not so bad. I'm getting used to it. And the views are nice-- snow'll make things interesting.”
He paused, then added, “Honestly? My father Impressed here, and he's always wanted to come back. When he said I should come with him, well, I didn’t have a reason _not_ to.” He added. “Besides, a good solid brown's always nice to have in reserve.”
“Oh,” A’brevan perked up a little, “Who was your father? When did he leave? My family has been here for generations,” he explained. “And you’re right about browns being useful- we have several young browns in the wing, I hope they’re making you feel welcome.”
He was going to beg K’valdran to find him another one old enough to need to regularly shave. He was fairly certain E’kavas was the same age as three of the others.
“H'tain.” H'kami supplied readily. “I don't know the exact month he transferred out but it was when they were opening up all the Weyrs.” He added. “I Impressed at Dream's End, but I'm enjoying the change of pace and scenery here so far.”
“ I’m not sure I know him, but I’m sure the Weyr is lucky to have him back,” A’brevan said. “And you. Of course people had to transfer out to get the new Weyrs running, but it’s good to have the old blood coming home. And the reports from your former wingleader were positive, of course. I’ll make sure to keep you partnered with someone local for another month or two for sweeps, make sure you get a good handle on the territory. Do you have a craft? I try to be flexible assigning sweeps around craftwork, when possible, so let me know if you ever need some time to work on that.” He did meet H’kami’s gaze directly when he said, “Reasonable time off, of course. The Wing comes first.”
“Harper senior apprentice.” H'kami offered sunnily, before sobering. “Oh I know. _Nothing_ comes before Teyrabth and the Wing, sir.” He assured, and met A'brevan's gaze evenly.
And then just as abruptly he grinned, slouched back again. “You'll have no trouble from us, sir. And thanks for the sweep assist. It'll be useful while we're still learning a whole new territory.”
“You’ll get the lay of the land sooner that way anyway. Well, do you have any questions for me? I know it must be strange coming into a wing in the middle of a shuffle like this,” A’brevan was candid about the reality that Ridge wing was in a bit of chaos at the moment.
“I heard the Wingthird was the last Weyrleader?” H'kami dared. “And that Weyrleader K’valdran shook up all the Wings, not just ours?”
He paused, then added, “Makes no difference to me, of course. I'll do my job snow or shine, Wingleader sir. Teyrabth, too. We're young but we're plenty steady.”
“You’ve heard the truth on both accounts,” A’brevan said. “I trust Weyrleader K’valdran knows what he’s doing, on both accounts, as well.” His tone made it clear he expected H’kami to do the same.
“Course.” H’kami offered readily. “I wouldn’t doubt Weyrleader K’valdran. Or do anything to jeopardize the wing, sir.” He added. “Like I said. I’m here to do my job, and whatever the Weyr and Wing needs.”
He paused, then added, “If you need anything from us, you’ve only to ask me or Teyrabth.”
“Of course. Well, if there’s nothing else you’d like to ask, I’ll let you get back to your free afternoon,” A’brevan said with a smile.
