Varethos

Varethos

“Hey there. What's your name?” H'kami greeted, slouching idly into the seat across from the stranger. “Hope this seat’s not taken.”

Varethos looked up from what he was doing. His dinner plate had long since been cleared, and he sat with his legs tucked awkwardly underneath him and a mug of tea cooling nearby. Several sheets of scrap paper and glue scattered across the table, and he reached out to pull them closer to himself.

"No one else has dared to interrupt Craft Time, you mean?" Varethos asked with a grin. His eyes dropped briefly to the shoulder knots, then raised again, "Journeyman Varethos. You're a new transfer?"

H'kami grinned back. “You got me.” He affirmed. “Brownrider H'kami, at your service. What're you working on?” He added, raising a curious brow.

"Starsmith's say it's supposed to rain for the next few days, so I'm working on a craft to entertain the littles tomorrow. I'm the assistant harper for the early turns classes." He propped his painstakingly folded papercraft…thing…up on the table.

"It's going to be a dragon. I hope. We are in the middle of trusting the process."

“Well. It's certainly a _shape_.” H'kami confirmed lightly. “The wings look decent. Are you trying to make it out of one piece or a few pieces?” He leaned forward, though he was careful not to jostle it.

"A few pieces. Hard to do a single piece with all the limbs. I want the joints to have some mobility, and it'll be easier for the littles to mimic. Not all of them will do a full dragon, anyway. There will be lots of attempts at dragons. Or runners. Or felines. Avians. Blobs." Varethos worked on folding a piece of scrap paper into his best approximation of a wing.

"Very complicated and delicate work, this harper stuff. So, what made you decide to transfer to the snowy south?"

“If realistic doesn't matter as much as just… getting a wing on there, a fan shape might work.” H'kami suggested, studied Varethos’ efforts. “Mind if I try?”

A pause, and then he shrugged. “Family, mostly. And I thought a location change could be interesting.” He grinned. “So far it _definitely_ is. Teyrabth thinks so too.”

Varethos slid some paper over to him. "I know I don't have to, but I _want_ to." He said with a grin, "I'm setting a shining example for the future generations of Pern, you know. So, are you joining family here or looking to get away from them?"

“Honestly, I transferred in with him.” H'kami huffed a laugh, took the paper. “It was easier to just agree with my father than turn it into a whole… thing.” He waved a hand dismissively. “Besides. Dragonsfall's growing on me. So's the company.” He added lightly, fiddling with the paper, holding up a fan-shape. “See, a wing like this, but you could trim the edges to make it more… wing.”

}:I am sure the wings are excellent.:{ Teyrabth offered to his rider, catching H'kami's thoughts.

"Fair. I can't imagine transferring out and leaving my family. Or them transferring without me, really." Discomfort set awkwardly in the pit of his stomach when he remembered that one father almost did. He wasn't sure that he was supposed to know, but M'thos had been in a poor mood after Barrier Lake's last Weyrwoman flight.

"I see your vision." Varethos agreed. The end product was a variation and looked a little strange overall, but at least the shape was starting to look somewhat draconic despite the mix of blue-green pieces.

“Hey, you needed wings, I found a way.” H'kami shrugged. “It's… not terrible? Teyrabth likes it.” He added. “It's a bit of a muddle, but I'm sure the littles won't mind too much.”

"Most of them aren't so concerned about colour accuracy, anyway. As long as the shape is dragon-like enough. There will be cries for pink and purple dragons. The ones with a preference at that age are ones with dragonrider families. I too was very adamant about green dragon toys when I was that size." Varethos said with a grin.

“Nothing wrong with a pretty green.” H'kami agreed, and grinned back. “Blue's a pretty colour too.” He added.

"Oh, that'll start an argument too, won't it? Which colour dragon is this? It's going to be like that blue dress the weavers got up in arms about." Varethos said with a laugh. "I'm choosing chaos bringing this into the creche, huh?"

“Chaos and sticky Weyrbrat fingers.” H'kami huffed his own laugh, amused. “Faranth knows, you're a braver man than I am.” He added. “But it definitely sounds like they'll have some fun with it. Maybe I'll catch you later, and you can tell me how it went?”

Varethos' eyebrows rose a little in surprise. Well. "If you can catch me, sure." He said teasingly.

“Maybe I'll give it a go.” H'kami responded, and grinned at him. “That is, if you'd like meeting again.”

Varethos looked at H'kami with mild amusement. He gave a small, noncommittal hum that could have meant anything, letting it stand in for agreement without committing himself to it outright.

“We’ll see," he said lightly, watching as H'kami finally pushed back from the table. Only when the brownrider left did Varethos exhale a little, glance down at the mess of wings and fragments, and started to glue the rest of the pieces together.
