Description: Hesbia moves into her new weyr
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 1, day 26 of Turn 13
There was a time in her life when Hesbia hadn't minded that her entire everything could be packed into a few bags and quickly moved somewhere else. But then the floods had come and carried away a few of those bags -- and her father -- and now it felt as though Hesbia's world had both lost something and gained something in the process.
She stood at the entrance to her new weyr. It was bare, which wasn't a problem for her and her Holdless background, but it was...hers. That was the problem. Even the caves that had been her home for a few Turns wasn't actually _her_ home. It had just been a space that she and her family fought to keep from others, not something assigned, given to her, as her new dragonrider rank allowed.
Oriveth's head loomed over her shoulder. She reached up to idly scratch his chin. The other thing that had bothered her was that her request for a small family weyr had gone through. She had a space for her and a space for her sister. But she hadn't told her sister that yet. }: She will be happily surprised, I think, :{ Oriveth remarked.
His head moved to nudge the small of her back encouragingly. "I'm going, I'm going," she muttered as she grabbed her bag and began exploring. Common area with a table, some seats, a couch. What was she going to do with a couch? Or a table? Wait, there was a kitchen?! No way! "Dad would have shit himself," she said without thinking. A pang of sadness followed but Hesbia found that time -- and Oriveth -- had really gone a long way on healing that. Probably also helped that the bronzerider was dead and her uncle was gone. Fresh start and all that.
"Okay, so we have a kitchen, a couch, some wash basins, a table," she recited to Oriveth, who was inspecting his new ledge and sleeping couch. "Oh, good, the rooms have doors so I won't have to hear her snore. There's some shelves. What the fuck do I do with shelves?"
}: Books? :{
Hesbia scowled. "Ori, do you think I actually _read_?" She could read. A little. But it wasn't fun. She honestly hated it. But Haseba was learning all of that in her classes and seemed to like it more. Maybe her sister could teach her. "Maybe I'll take up pottery or some stupid hobby." She didn't have a hobby either. Being Holdless hadn't left a whole lot of time for that.
Hesbia blew out a breath. Shells, it was going to take her a while to get used to this whole no longer Holdless thing.
}: I see her, :{ Oriveth said. He was peering beyond his ledge into the Weyrbowl. Hesbia assumed her meant he could see her sister. Were there stairs up to the weyr? Shit, Hesbia hadn't been looking for those since she could just ride Oriveth up.
"Okay, I'm claiming this room as mine and she can have the other one," Hesbia said, quickly picking the bigger room and tossing her pack on the bed. "Sheets. Bedding. We need that. Maybe some extra clothes. Shit, we're going to be moving all sorts of stuff into here. There's just furniture. Has'll like that. She likes shopping." It helped that shopping at the Weyr didn't cost anything. But the moment Hesbia graduated, she was going to earn some extra marks and buy things that were _hers_ and not some hand-me-downs.
Hesbia hurried back over to Oriveth but paused to look back at the weyr that was now theirs. Theirs. Their little family, their little space. Absently, her hand rested against his dark flank for comfort. The flood had taken away something from her but had brought her here. Brought her to Oriveth. "This is so weird, Ori," she whispered as though she was afraid of someone hearing her. She thought about her father and wished he had been standing there too. He would have known exactly what to do.
}: Yes, Hesbia mine, but we are together. We will make this space our own. A home. :{ The way he said that last word caused a small shiver along her spine. It was a promise, a hope. Things she wasn't used to having.
But her dragon was right. They could do this. This was something she had always wanted. And on that thought, she felt like she had the start of a plan. Some sheets, a few plates, extra blankets. A tapestry or two. Or a painting. Books. Whatever it took to make it feel like a home. "Okay, let's go get Has and show her our new place. And then go shopping."
