F'lin came from /between/ into a biting wind and bright skies as Seneth bugled a greeting to Dragonfall Weyr's watchdragon. The bronze circled the Weyr as he descended and both he and his rider surveyed the dragons draped over the chill rocks to soak up the meager sun. There were so many familiar dragons that he felt a pang of longing for River Bluff's cliffs and heavy, humid air. The thunderheads that growled at night and the wild, cloying scent of flowers during the day.
}:There is Tabanirth,:{ Seneth angled his wings toward Tsaera's weyr. }:She has invited us to land but then tells me that I must go elsewhere.:{
F'lin hid a smile. **Does she, now? Is she expecting company?**
There was a slight pause as Seneth and Tabanirth spoke. }:Sanderveth is coming to join her after he hunts, so I must leave:{
Sanderveth... F'lin ruminated on that. Tabanirth didn't usually favour bronzes... his train of thought was derailed by a glitter of gold by the Weyrlake. It was more of a punch to the eyes than a subtle glimmer. **_That_ is Galgaith?!**
Seneth turned his head so that he could better see the gold. }:Yes?:{
**She's _huge_!**
}:Isn't she? Her wings could block out the sun.:{ Seneth's mindvoice was laced with admiration as he gazed upon the young queen. }:She could eat an entire herdbeast in one bite. It is too bad that she was caught by a brown dragon. We should come here next time she rises. I will catch her for sure.:{
F'lin held back a laugh. They swept past her to land beside the deep, dark gold that was Tabanrith. Seneth rumbled and ducked his head in greeting as F'lin bowed from his seat on his dragon's neck. "You look well, Tabanirth. Can you let Grandmother know I'm here?"
"I already know," Tsaera said dryly as she stepped from her weyr into the chill air. "Hurry up and come inside before I freeze to death."
"Isn't this warm for Dragonsfall?" F'lin dismounted and swept Tsaera into a hug. "Hello."
She laughed and ushered him inside. The fire was roaring in the fireplace and the weyr nearly too warm. F'lin realized that he was acclimatizing to Barrier Lake's temperate weather as he peeled off layers until he was comfortable. "I saw Galgaith on my way in. I didn't realize she was that big."
"She's an absolute brute," Tsaera said affectionately. "It's a good thing that Sybana is as strong willed as she is. Some of the goldriders I know wouldn't be able to deal with Galgaith as well as she's done."
"Seneth said that she'd just had her first flight and was caught by a brown?"
Tsaera nodded. "Rhalith. Perhaps you remember him? He's from River Bluff Weyr."
F'lin wracked his brain for a moment. "L'something. L'raki? A bit shorter than I am, dark hair?" If memory served him correctly, the brownrider was also a drunkard and a troublemaker. He didn't add that part.
"L'keri. He flies with the mid-altitude Wing. The flight was perhaps a bit short but that's nothing surprising given that it was their first time. Tea?" She gestured to the small sideboard that held a tray from the kitchens.
F'lin spotted a carafe of klah and opted for that instead. "Good for L'keri. I'm happy to see the 'Bluff lineages carry on. Think it'll be a big clutch? Galgaith is huge."
Tsaera considered that for a moment. "I suppose we shall see. It could go either way."
"I'd bet a mark on a large clutch." F'lin sipped his klah. The Kitchens at Dragonsfall added some subtle spice to theirs that warmed his insides. "Speaking of gold dragons and the company they keep, I hear that Tabanirth is expecting Sanderveth soon? She told Seneth to find somewhere else to sit."
There was a slight pause. "She is. She's become rather fond of him, I think."
Something in the way she said it made F'lin wonder if it was just the dragons who were fond of each other, or if the riders were as well. M'kall wasn't that much younger than his grandmother...
"Tell me about Barrier Lake. How is Thiseta's first batch of weyrlings coming along?" the goldrider asked, hoping that F'lin wouldn't notice the abrupt change in topic. He was getting a speculative glimmer in his eye that she didn't like one bit.
"Interesting. There's two lads who can hear all the dragons and one new greenrider who is pregnant, which will be a challenge for the new Weyrlingmaster. It's a challenging class."
"By a _pair_ of greenrider Weyrlingmasters, or so I hear. There's a bronze in that clutch, isn't there?"
Everyone worried about that, but so far Q'vettan's unexpected choice of Weyrlingmaster had proven he was capable. "There is, but I don't think it'll be a problem."
"Mmm. I suppose that some of the teaching on key topics will have to be farmed out to the metallic riders. And I heard that you have a greenrider Weyrdragonhealer now too."
"You'll have to ask Thiseta about Eyla," F'lin said quickly. "But so far she's done fine leading the Dragon Infirmary."
Tsaera sighed. She wanted to complain and say that greenriders wearing Weyrlingmaster and Weyrdragonhealer knots simply wasn't the way things were supposed to be, but it made her think of conversations with Sybana about the Holdless. Real life was never as black and white as the Harper tales made it seem. Perhaps her concerns would come to nothing. Just another old auntie fretting over the wind. "I suppose change comes with every Pass."
"You'd know better than I would-- hey!" F'lin dodged Tsaera's swat. "I'm a Wingsecond now! You can't treat me like that!"
"I still out rank you, and even when I won't you'll still be my grandson and I'll smack you upside the head any time I want. And this is as much my first Pass as it's yours."
F'lin set down his cup of klah. "I know. I'm just... a lot has happened over the past few Turns. I'm ready for a Turn without a major disaster."
Her smile softened, grew sad. "So do I. I think we're due."
