Sybana looked over Aydhara with new interest. “I’ve never met a girl who wanted blue so much. Nearly all of the girls during my candidacy were mad for gold, and even Zaphare was happy at the idea of a green-- well, happy enough that she offered to seduce one away from me anyway. But you-- you only want blue?”

“I wasn’t expecting _any_ dragon,” Zaphare admitted. “And didn’t think about it much before I… got Searched. But now I just can’t imagine having any other dragon than Zollarth, and if he was green, he wouldn’t be Zollarth. When I ask him why he picked a girl, he acts like that’s the same question as when I ask him why he picked _me_ specifically: he just says "because I’m his.” She gave an exaggerated shrug.

"I'd take a brown or bronze, if any of them decided to stop being so picky." Aydhara answered, "I want to fly a full Fall without having to be escorted around with a flamethrower, or stuck on the hatching grounds for months. No offense, Sybana. If I've seen even half the work mom does, I don't want it."

“No offence taken,” said Sybana happily. The life of a goldrider, and high office in general, required a certain strength and temperament not everyone possessed. “But why not a green dragon? There’s so many more of them and many are so lovely and sweet. They have practically the same duties as the blues and don’t hare off to a mating flight nearly as often or unpredictably."

“That’s what I say!” Cirina said excitedly, “Greens are the way to go. They rise on a schedule, their duties are predictable. It’s more exciting than a gold- I wouldn’t want all that hidework and responsibility,” she gave Sybana a sheepish look. “And they’re little. Less to oil. And so fast!”

"Blues are fast too!" Aydhara argued, her indignation loud enough that a librarian did shush them. Then, only a little quieter, "And greens can do everything but be Wingleader now, Cirina. Our entire Weyrlingstaff team at Barrier Lake are greenriders. Lots of spots for responsibility. I don't _want_ to be predictable. There are fewer women on blues than there are gold dragons. I still get to be 'special' _and_ get all the benefits of a green dragon. The mating flights don't bother me. I'd rather have a woman in the flightroom than some man more interested in one-upping his- or his dragon's- rivals instead of doing his one job well."

Zaphare actually guffawed, not bothering to hide it. “His one job! Yeah, that’s a benefit -- if you’re on green, all your partners will be men. Or… almost all of them, I guess, but you might not ever be lucky enough to get a girl because there’s so few of us. But if you’re on blue, lots of greenriders are girls. So long as Zollarth can catch, I get the benefits of both sometimes. I _hope_ he’s good at catching.” She paused, cocking her head. “Would you be upset if a green picked you, though? I know a girl like that…”

"Everyone's got an opinion about dragon colour." Aydhara said and made a face. "Probably in the moment, because I don't think I can help that, but not if she decided to pick me despite that. She'd just be doing what she thinks is best. And that probably means I'll have to remain the leader of the fan club. Y'know, since I won't be accepted into the Cool Bluerider Club."

Cirina sighed wistfully, and said in an almost disturbingly cheerful tone, “I wish I could punch girls like that and steal their dragons. What are those greens even thinking? I hate when there’s a gold egg on the sands, we get all the silly candidates and I have to help them with their homework.”

"That's what you get for getting overly invested in one." Aydhara said with a teasing nudge. "It's a slippery slope between 'helping out a buddy' and 'oh boy I love helping holder kids'."

“One of my weyrlingmasters assigns them to me like homework assignments,” Cirina grumbled.

Zaphare bumped shoulders with Sybana, glancing at her with a knowing grin. “Nothing wrong with helping holder kids! Some of them are eager enough to learn. …Some of _us_, I mean.”

Sybana instantly felt her cheeks heat and she didn't dare look at Zaphare. She couldn't risk the reminder of exactly the kind of homework she had asked for help with. Not here, not now. “...Zaphare’s remarkably good at meteorology,” she lied by way of explanation. There had been just the barest pause as she scrambled to come up with a topic. Zaph was rubbish at it actually. This reversal of facts stung Sybana's pride, but needs must. “She helped me through that section of training.” With any luck her grudging admission would appear to explain her blush.

Under the table Sybana gave Zaphare’s shin a kick.

Aydhara didn't know Zaphare well enough to question it, and any faults in her training flew in the face of the hero worship that had already been built up in her head. "Some of them, sure. All of them? No. You two sound like you would have been fun. And Cirina got a brownrider boy out of it and any-time dragon transport." She nudged Cirina with a grin.

“It’s true,” Cirina said brightly. “But that one wasn’t assigned to me, I volunteered. Well, actually, when he asked me to help him study, I thought he meant ‘study’, you know?” She waggled her eyebrows just in case they didn’t and launched into the only slightly embarrassing story about wearing a gather dress to a study session and then having to scrub chalk out of it when they were done.
