L’kayric studied the course quietly, then found himself smiling. He
honestly enjoyed most of his lessons, and studied hard to do well in
class, but this looked like an interesting break of the routine.
“Well, this looks like it’s going to be fun. It’s nice to do something
different every now and again, isn’t it?”

“Looks like a good challenge,” Katora agreed as she surveyed the
course. She didn’t have a Seacrafter’s rigging experience but she knew
she was nimble. She could probably do that part of the course without
falling.

“Where do we stand if we just want to be the audience?” S’yen asked in
a bored tone. Sometimes it was really easy for him to slide that old
mask into place, especially if Jenith was sleeping. Truthfully though,
Jenith or not, he was _not_ interested in doing an obstacle course.

"I don't think the Weyrlingmasters will be letting anyone get away
with that." A'ten eyed the course with a mixture of anticipation and
nerves. The ropes course looked like fun place to mess about, but if
he fell off in front of everyone, he'd be mortified - and he wasn't
sure what was supposed to happen at the middle stations. What was that
dummy for? Maybe someone else would know what to do.

“Good morning everyone!” K’yne called stridently over the gathered
group. He was enjoying this too much, simply put. “As you can see we
have a different sort of lesson planned for today. This course will
test your agility, your critical thinking, and most importantly, your
ability to work with a team. We have already split you into three
teams, you can see the names posted there,” he pointed to one of the
wooden posts of the ropes course. “Gather your teams and decide on a
team name and then we’ll get started.”

-- Team 2 --

With a firm mental nudge from Adamanth, Z’renh jogged over to find his
teammates. He scanned the list and then put some distance between
himself and it.

“L’kayric! Rh’din! Sanvi! Katora! You’re with me!” He called as he
went, waving. Katora joined him without a word, and Sanvi followed
with another jaw-stretching yawn only half-hidden behind her hand.

“Good morning,” L’kayric greeted. “We should get some stretches in
while we talk about names. It’ll help wake us up, and looks like we’ll
need to be limber.”

“How about instead we make a break for it and go find some klah,”
Sanvi groused. “I’m sure K’yne won’t notice.”

“Stretching sounds like a great idea. It’s the next best thing to
klah, eh?” Z’renh took a seat and began stretching his legs. “The
sooner we ace this, the sooner we can get inside and warmed up!”

L’kayric rolled his shoulders and then started with some basic arm
stretches. “We should name ourselves something competitive, but also
inspiring. How about ‘Skyguard’?”

Katora shrugged one shoulder. “Skyguard sounds good. We’re
dragonriders so we guard the sky, right?”

It wasn’t helpful but Sanvi couldn’t help herself. “We’re not
dragonriders if we can’t ride our dragons.”

“‘Dragonwashers’ isn't quite as inspiring,” said Z’renh. “Have any
other suggestions for a name, Sanvi?”

Sanvi frowned at being called out. “Dragon… drudges?”

“Skyguards sounds good to me.” Rh’din offered, after listening to the
back and forth a little bit.

It still sounded a bit pompous to Sanvi, but since she couldn’t think
of anything better she shrugged in agreement. “It’ll work.”

“Skyguard it is!” Z’renh smiled. He did not especially like it, but
neither did he have anything better. So he would pretend to like it.

-- Team 1 --

“Listen up, guys,” M'rhas loosely beckoned each member of his team in,
his competitiveness granting a temporary camaraderie, “I've got the
_perfect_ name for us.”

“Hit me with it!” C’uren answered eagerly. “What’s the name, friend?”

Nosarre rolled her eyes. Suddenly Sybana wasn't the worst part of the class.

“Alright,” M’rhas grinned. “How about the ‘Threadnoughts’?”

"Sit down, M'rhas." Nosarre said. And, as if she hadn't just been
taunting the girl, continued, "Queen's Wing. Sensible."

Sybana blinked, clearly surprised by that suggestion and its source.
The look she gave Nosarre was between suspicious and bewildered as she
waited for the second shoe to fall. When the expected insult didn’t
follow, she turned back to the rest. “Well, that has my vote, but if
the rest of you want Threadknots…” She trailed off with an elegant
shrug. They could do what they like. It wasn’t like these were
permanent.

“_Queen’s Wing_?” M'rhas wasn't sure what he was expecting from
Nosarre, but her lack of enthusiasm immediately rubbed him the wrong
way. “That's so lame. You have _no_ imagination. Okay, okay. What
about ‘The Threadknots and Nosarre’.” C’uren giggled at this.

Sybana took one look at the face Nosarre made and said dryly, “I think
you were closer before… But if there are no other suggestions, it
sounds like we’re evenly split.” She turned at last to the team’s
youngest member. “That leaves it up to you, A’ten.” Her tone was
light, yet there was something both sweetly hopeful and selfishly
expectant in the look she gave him. “You’re our tiebreaker.”

A'ten hesitated for a moment, but not even the chance to win a
goldrider's favor could tempt the fourteen-Turn-old boy to be in a
team called the Queen's Wing. "Threadnoughts it is." He gave Sybana an
apologetic smile. "Sorry, ladies."

Nosarre and Sybanna shared a look. Boys.

“Fret not, ladies. You're still Threadnoughts!” M'rhas smirked,
slinging an arm around A'ten's shoulders like the other weyrling
hadn’t hesitated a second. Oh yes, he liked the taste of victory,
alright. This was bound to be a good omen.
