A'drios

Katora recognized that shade of green dragon as Tembreth as she and Saoirth walked towards the shoreline for a quick bath in between lessons. "Hello, Tembreth!" Katora greeted with unflappable boldness, even though she knew the dragon wouldn't talk to her directly.

Tembreth regarded the girl for a moment and then, concluding that she had no idea who she was, turned to her dragon.

}:Does your rider know me?:{

}: I believe so, :{ Saoirth replied. She sat in front of the larger green, canting her head up, up, up to take in the adult. }: She remembers you. That I can feel, certainly. :{

"Oh, Katora!" A'drios waved. "Congratulations!" He had not seen her Impress. He had been a bit busy at the time. But he could certainly see that she had a dragon with her now.

"Thank you!" Katora answered. "Her name is Saoirth. But I think it has more letters than how it sounds. Has Tembreth ever had to spell her name out for you?"

"Uh..." A'drios thought back, but he supposed if such a thing had happened, it would have stuck pretty firmly in his memory. "I'm not sure she has a super firm grasp on the concept of spelling."

}:Don't be ridiculous; I know what spelling is.:{

**Spell your name.**

}:You spell it, nerd.:{

**That's what I thought.**

Katora nodded thoughtfully. "Saoirth said the same thing, more or less. She just knows that her name is more letters than what it sounds like but can't tell me what letters they are. I thought it annoying at first but now, I'm making a little game of it. S-E-R-T-H or S-U-R-T-H or maybe it's some weird combination like S-E-U-R-T-H or S-A-O-I-R-T-H."

}: I like that combination, :{ Saoirth interjected.

"Which one?" Katora asked, surprised.

}: That last one. It sounds pretty when you spell it out. It fits me. :{

Katora let out a disbelieving grunt. "Well, I think she just figured out how to spell her name."

"Huh. And that spells Saoirth?" A'drios folded his arms and tilted his head to ponder. "Well. It makes about as much sense as the way you spell half of anything else, so. Why not?"

The green weyrling shrugged. "Your guess is as good as mine. It could be spelled with a lot more letters, so long as she's my dragon."

}: To whom else would I belong? :{ Saoirth queried with an affirming chirrup.

"Do they grow fast? Dragon babies?" Katora asked A'drios.

"Sometimes, you'll swear you can see her growing right in front of you," A'drios chuckled. "They have a lot of growing to do, and not all that long to do it in."

Thinking of Nosarre and their conversation, Katora asked, "Do they get any more...coordinated? Graceful? Most of them are like canine puppies right now. Tembreth doesn't seem like that."

"It's hard to be graceful when you're growing so quickly, I guess. Every day, you have to start over learning _how_ to be," said A'drios. "Once they're full grown, they'll figure out how to use their limbs properly."

The young greenrider bobbed her head as she thought about this. "What should I start doing now? To be good at being a dragonrider," she abruptly asked. "Like you are. I want to get ahead of the class."

"Oh, like _I_ am?" A'drios chuckled. He was not sure he could recommend anyone her age should be anything like him. He did his work, and he did it well, but dragonriding did not feel much like something one Did Well At in any way other than being physically fit.

Oh, that was good. He would go with that.

"Get in as much running as you can. Or some kind of cardio if it's cold enough to freeze your boâ€" ...uh... your body."

She nodded once, understanding. His suggestion seemed sound and easy enough. "It does feel a lot colder here than I'm used to, even on the road. Running shouldn't be a problem for me though. I used to it for the caravan. Run ahead to scout. Does Saoirth need to run too?"

"She doesn't need to. And, well. Considering the gangly gait, it might be for the best if she doesn't." A'drios grinned.

His words brought a dark furrow to Katora's expression. Gangly was not a word that she attributed to Saoirth. After a moment of trying to see it from his perspective, she contemplatively said, "I suppose dragons are more suited for flying than running. Different musculature."

"They _can_ run a bit," said A'drios. "But it's especially hard while they're still growing. They don't quite remember how big they are just yet, and it makes it easier to trip and fall. And once they're full grown, they might as well fly, eh?"

Katora nodded in agreement. She looked down at Saoirth. "Then I'll run and you keep my time."

Saoirth tilted her head in confusion. }: What is time? :{

Katora let out a loud exhalation, wondering how best to tackle that question. "Have you ever had to explain some large concept to your dragon, like time?" she asked A'drios.

"Ahhh..." A'drios rubbed his chin as he pondered. Even then, he could not inspire enough curiosity in Tembreth to provoke her to consider such things. "She's sort of halfway between not caring about stuff like that and not wanting to bother with having to listen to me explain it. She'll just kind of... watch and listen until she gets it on her own or forgets why she even wanted to know."

The weyrling let out a soft, thoughtful grunt. "I guess they really do all have different personalities." She looked down at Saorith and smiled softly. Then, looking back at A'drios, she said, "We should probably get to class soon. It takes a lot longer for them to walk across the way right now. Thank you for answering my questions."

"Any time," said A'drios. "Whatever you need. You know how to reach me."
