O'dyn let out a relieved whoop as Genireth appeared over Printer Hall. Instead of circling about, the young blue went straight for the courtyard to land. "Master Aleriand! We're here!" O'dyn called as he came into the Hall.
Aleriand didn't have enough klah for this. Still, he collected the pile of letters and contracts still in the chaotic mess of his desk and brought them out. "I have a couple stops for you today. Do you think you can handle it?"
The littlest bluerider waffled. "Um, maybe?" he answered. "Where are they all needing to go?" If he had been there in training, then they could do it. But if they hadn't, O'dyn was terrified of going somewhere without another dragon to guide them there.
"A couple letters for the printers at Dragonsfall Weyr and drafts of contracts for the Smith Hall and Farmcraft." Aleriand said, and a few for friends at Dolphin Cove on your way back. What do you think? Manageable?"
O'dyn nodded absently as he counted off the places on his fingers. Okay, he could do the Weyrs easily enough and the Halls were in those territories as well so he wouldn't have to fly straight or rely on someone else for the coordinates. Okay, he could do this! He beamed at Aleriand. "Yes! We can do this! Is that all you need?"
"Let's see how you do with these first." Aleriand said. "Some of them may want you to wait so they can send a reply back, or have other mail for me. Hop back before you head home just so I know it's all done." And that he hadn't caused an extra weyrling casualty from a kid trying to jump _between_ unsupervised.
"Yes, Master!" O'dyn answered with boyish enthusiasm. He saluted and then darted off to his dragon. "Gen! We're-"
}: Genireth. :{
"-going to Dragonsfall Weyr first! Can you talk to the watchrider so they can show you where to go?"
}: Of course. :{ Genireth's eyes whirled as he bespoke the brown dragon on duty, watching his little rider clamber up. }: I see where. Ready? :{
Fitting his goggles over his head, O'dyn answered with, "Ready!" Genireth took off, circled, while O'dyn nervously gripped the straps. It was going to be fine, fine, fine, okay, just fine, another dragon was there, Genireth could see where, it was fine, it was fine, it was--
Dark. Really, really dark.
And then it was bright light and _cold_! O'dyn let out a whoop, watching his breath steam the air. "We made it! Okay, we're going to find the printers first."
The next few candlemarks went more or less like that until everything was delivered and O'dyn had a few letters to bring back. There was even a book and a...well, he wasn't really sure what was in that satchel but he wasn't going to be nosy. That was rude! And broke the...integ...hm...integrity! That was the word! The integrity of being a carrier. Picturing Printer Hall with the same precision as before, Genireth hopped /between/ and reemerged over the Hall. "We're back, Master Aleriand!" O'dyn called brightly.
That was faster than Aleriand expected. "And how did it go, young man? Didn't get too much trouble along the way, did you?"
O'dyn shook his head. "Gen's a fast flyer! We made it to the Halls in record time and I had him hover over them so that I could memorize them for next time. So we'll be faster! Oh, one of the letter recipients gave me this to give to you." He held up the satchel. "And a book, but I think you were expecting that? It sounded like you were. I hope you were. Else you have a new book."
Aleriand did look surprised as O'dyn handed him the responses, but recognized the book and the correspondence once he had them in hand and could read the title. "Ah, yes. Much appreciated. Are you feeling confident enough to handle some Book Dragon Deliveries? Zariah from Dragonsfall has been handling it all so far, but I'd rather her not have to worry about jumping between as many time zones."
"Yes! I'm ready! I talked with her about it already and Genireth can talk to Relsath to get coordinates if we really need them but I'm already going to shadow her for those first few deliveries so that I know where I'm going and who to speak with and what to expect. I can't wait! I'm going to build up Dolphin Cove's library with the marks that I make. I'm saving up for a dictionary there!"
Aleriand huffed a chuckle. Zariah didn't know it, but babysitting O'dyn was payment for her stealing thermoses of klah and snacks from the kitchens. "That's very kind of you, but be sure to talk to the Harpers there before you make any big purchases like that. They might already have a couple good dictionaries that you can borrow. We have a few journeyman printers there now, too, if you want to offer your services to them as well."
"Can do!"
