Katora woke up _hungry_.

She knew that was odd because she had eaten a big dinner so she couldn’t be that hungry. And there was something off to it, like it was an echo within her. She rolled over, intending to figure it out over a shower, but something made her stop.

A little green dragon, her faceted eyes oversized within her triangular head, was looking up at her, adoration pulsing in the swirling blue facets. }: I was _trying_ not to wake you -- you were quite tired -- but unfortunately-- :{

“Saoirth!” Katora cried happily. She threw her arms around the dragon’s neck. Her dragon! Her very own, beautiful green dragon. “You’re hungry! That makes sense now. You were waiting on me and I could feel it. Let’s get you fed.”

Saoirth trotted gracefully at Katora’s side as they went towards the feeding pens, where one of Weyrlingmaster staff was cutting up meat for the early risers. She wasn’t the first weyrling awake though. Two others -- a blue and a brown -- were already there. “Good morning,” Katora greeted.

}: Mine! Mine there is someone else coming-- it is Saoirth!:{ Paskith exclaimed, in between vigorous bites of his own food, unable to help a happy, if slightly clumsy, sort of hop. }:Hello Saoirth!! Hello and good morning!:{

“Morning.” Rh'din greeted in return, amicably. “Yesterday was… wow. Can you even _believe_ it?”

Paskith crooned. }:You are Mine and I am Yours… but please do not stop feeding me!:{

}: Good morning Paskith, :{ Saoirth greeted regally. Katora smirked. Who said greens could be as queenly as golds? Saoirth handled herself with such poise and manners that it was surprising.

“Believe it, my friend!” the other weyrling said. It was Ceauren, well…

Katora canted her head to the side. “What are they calling you now?” she asked the effervescent brown weyrling.

“C’uren!” he immediately, brightly replied. “Roeth likes it immensely and I think it’ll be a perfect way to drive the Weyrlingmasters up a wall, trying to remember all of the right phonetics between everyone. What an excellent adventure this is going to be!”

Katora smiled a little at that. She didn’t find C’uren as annoying as some of the others did but he was a handful. She knelt beside an available bucket and began feeding Saorith. True to form, even though she was starving, Saoirth needed no reminder to chew.

The same could not be said about Roeth. “Whoa, whoa, my friend! Easy!” C’uren laughed.

}: I am just so _hungry_, :{ the youngster complained, spreading his wings wide in emphasis. }: Paskith and I both! More food! :{

“I'm Rh'din now.” The new blue rider told Katora, and he looked a bit dazzled by it all still, a helpless sort of grin crossing his features. Especially when Paskith paused, just for a moment, in his eating to shove his head into his rider in a return of said emotion }:Yes, you are, and I am Paskith and we are united!!! … but Roeth is right too! More food!!:{

“All right, all right… let's not get carried away, Paskith.” Rh'din said, but he couldn't help another laugh. Paskith just looked at him. }:Who would carry us away?:{ he asked, barely remembering to chew on his food in time.

}: The ocean? :{ Roeth said to Paskith. }: C’uren says that the ocean is huge. Bigger than the Weyr. And the Weyr is really big so…maybe the ocean could carry us away. :{ The brown dragon rustled his wings like a shiver as he chewed. }: I don’t want to be carried away, :{ he said plaintively.

“Roeth, my beautiful friend, who would dare carry you away?” C’uren asked. “We’re here! On the ground! Nothing would dare carry you away unless it’s me.”

“They are small enough to carry,” Katora remarked. “Well, almost.” Saoirth for certain but Roeth would be a challenge.

}:Oh, that sounds _enormous_.:{ Paskith quailed a little bit, and took his time, and a few more bites of his food, thinking things over. And then he rallied. }:Well. I am sure that Ours will never let us be carried away! Or… they will go with us, though I am not sure where we would all need to go.:{

“You're okay, Paskith.” Rh’din soothed. “We're not going anywhere else. It was a figure of speech.” He stroked Paskith's head, fed him another bite. “_Chew_.” He reminded the blue- HIS blue!!- firmly.

He gave the other two Weyrlings another grin, albeit sheepish. “... So. Either of you wake up confused for a moment like I did?”

“Oh, most definitely!” C’uren enthusiastically agreed. “It felt like a dream! And then I woke up and the dream was REAL!”

Katora wondered if his smile could get any bigger.

“I didn’t expect to feel her hunger,” she remarked quietly. “I thought I was hungry instead.”

“Me too! Oh, I could have eaten a whole herdbeast! I was so hungry!” C’uren proclaimed.

“You're telling _me_.” Rh’din chuckled. “Woke up feeling like I needed to eat a whole herdbeast, rolled over-- and came face to snout with this handsome creature.”

}:I was very much hungry and ready to eat.:{ Paskith responded, bouncing a little bit. }:So was Roeth and Saoirth I am sure!!!:{

}: I would have waited for my Katora, :{ Saoirth said as she daintily chewed.

Roeth, in the meanwhile, was investigating Paskith’s bucket. }: Do you have any leftovers? :{ he asked his blue brother.

Paskith bounced a little bit, reached out to nudge Roeth aside with his snout _just in case_ there was more of said food for him. }: Oh if there are I think I can eat them!!:{

Rh'din tipped the bucket to show his inquisitive blue. “Sorry, Paskith-- you ate it all, baby blue.”

}:But I think I could eat a little more…:{ Paskith responded, and stretched his neck to sniff at Roeth's bucket in turn.

“Never fear my friends, more food is here!” C’uren declared. With flourish, he offered two fresh buckets up, one for each dragon. “Eat up!”

“Remember not to overfeed them,” Katora cautioned, recalling what few Candidate lessons she had attended. “Or we’ll have a mess later.”

“No worries! They know when they’re full, right?” C’uren assured her with the confidence of someone had absolutely no clue what he was talking about. He winked at Rh’din.

“Well… as long as there's enough food for everyone.” Rh'din half guessed. “I mean, Paskith and Roeth are bigger than Saoirth, so… maybe they need more?” He suggested, and held out a hand for Paskith's new bucket in hopes of avoiding a scene like last night's.

And to keep Paskith from crowding the bigger brown. “Hey, Paskith, come over here, all right?”

“Roeth won’t steal from him, my friend,” C’uren assured Rh’din. “Not like those savages yesterday. Oo-WHEEEE that was an event! Harper tales never speak about brawls during a Hatching, at least not with the new weyrlings! What a tale we’ll have to tell for ages. Chaos crew clutch!”

Katora made a dismissive grunt. “I’m glad you didn’t act like that,” she whispered to Saoirth.

}: That’s because I’m a respectable dragon. :{

Katora grinned. “You are. Better than any gold for sure.” Saorith’s eyes whirled a brilliant blue of happiness and adoration.

“I’d rather have Paskith than any other dragon-- _especially_ if last night was representative of how the rest of them are.” Rh'din agreed fervently.

“C'mere, lad.” He added, and Paskith all but _pranced_ back to His, crooning delightedly.

“Ah, it’ll all even out, I’m sure,” C’uren replied. “Truth be told, having a chromatic is where it is _at_! All of the freedom, none of the responsibility!”

“And far less dragon to be cared for,” Katora added, thinking about how they would have to oil their growing dragons after baths.

“But still dragon enough! When do we get to start flying? Next sevenday, yes? I can’t wait!” C’uren exclaimed.

Katora’s sharp bark of laughter was cutting. “Didn’t you pay attention in classes? We’ve got sevendays, months before that happens,” she reminded him. “They _just_ hatched.”

“I bet we see them flying sooner than we think,” C’uren said with a wink to Rh’din.

“I imagine it’ll feel like forever, but also not long enough.” Rh’din laughed, stroked the blue neck when Paskith tried to shove his entire head into the bucket.

}:Oh, certainly we will all fly the moment we can!:{ The blue announced to both of his siblings.

“What a grand day that’ll be--hey, Roeth, what’s wrong?” C’uren’s expression suddenly became concerned as his dragon began making a sound not unlike an unhappy feline.

Katora knew that sound.

She deftly touched Saoirth’s shoulder, guiding her green a few steps away, just in time for Roeth to barf half of his breakfast out in a meaty, red, gross puddle.

“Oh, that's n-” Rh’din started to say, but was interrupted by a strange twisting cramp in his own belly-- or was it Paskith's?

The blue made an unhappy whining sound, hunched his shoulders, and stepped back, starting to heave as well.

“Oh, Paskith... I'm _sorry_.” Rh'din murmured. “Let it out, Pask.”

“Told you,” Katora said without rancor.

While it was obvious that C’uren was a little distressed over his lifemate’s vomiting, his tone was upbeat, though a bit strained. “Oh, we’ve all had nights like that, my friend! Don’t you worry, Roeth! We’ll uh…we’ll be a bit more careful next time and all good! We’re all learning this together, yes? Oh dear, I do not look forward to cleaning that up.”

“Maybe he’ll do what a canine does and eat it,” Katora suggested with smug wickedness.

“Eat--” C’uren started to repeat. “_That_ is gross, my friend. Very gross. Roeth is a dragon, not a canine, am I right? He would not do something so--Roeth what are you doing?!”

Roeth sniffed the gross puddle, tentatively licked it, and then wrinkled his nose at it.

Paskith's eyes whirled unhappily, and his throat worked, but up his meal came as well. He whined.

Rh’din stroked his neck again, trying to soothe. “It’s okay, Pask. Just try not to eat it…”

}:I don’t _want_ to.:{ the blue responded, then craned his neck towards Saoirth. }:Maybe your meat is better…. :{

}: Perhaps you should wait a bit for your stomach to settle, brother, :{ Saoirth said primly.

}:But… :{ Paskith started, then sighed gustily. }:Okay.:{

Rh’din petted his blue again. “... It's okay, Paskith.”

“They’ll grow out of it soon enough, everyone says,” Katora said. She handed Rh’din a rag to begin cleaning up Paskith. “It’s only their first sevenday. There’ll be a lot of this. Just wait until we have to muck out the Barracks.”

“Muck out the--- what?!” C’uren gasped. He obviously hadn’t been paying attention to that part of their first lesson.

Dutifully but with a little smug vindictiveness, Katora quoted, “Dragons will defecate /between/ and dragons that cannot go /between/ must have their excrement cleaned. Weyrling dragons will defecate between-”

“Okay, friend, you can stop because that is _gross_ as well and I cannot believe we will have to muck out the Barracks like…like…ship’s boys!” C’uren made an additional face to show his disgust.

Katora shrugged one shoulder. She looked at Rh’din instead. “It’s okay. It’ll go quick, they say. We’ll be flying in no time.”

“Thank you.” Rh'din told Katora, with a slight smile, gently wiping.

Katora smiled back. “No problem.”

“Are you two smiling about _poop_?!” C’uren cried.
