Date: month 12, day 3 of Turn 3
B'ram was wary as his eyes adjusted to the dim light of the Hold. He had heard that not all riders found a trip to Emerald Falls pleasant. And of course, there was all that stuff about the Hold setting fire to their own Harper Hall. What a nasty bit of business _that_ was! Still, his number came up this time, and he was on currier duty when the Hold called. He stopped the first drudge he saw and asked, very politely, "Could you tell me where I could find the Steward, Corowal? I believe he asked for a currier from the Weyr?"
The drudge nervously spout out some directions, glancing out the door at the large brown that inhabited their courtyard. B'ram was pretty sure Girifith could handle himself, so he followed the drudges directions through the maze of a building until he finally found what he was looking for. Tapping on the door, he waited patiently for a reply from within.
"Please, enter!" Corowal called, frowning at the records he was reading. Something didn't quite feel right in it. "Excuse me, Steward?" The brownrider peeked his head inside the door. "You asked for a currier from there Weyr?"
"Oh, yes, I did," Corowal smiled. He put the record aside and switched his mind to other matters. He would return to it later. Sometimes, letting it simmer in subconsious brought the answeres. "Refreshments?" he asked politely.
"Ah... yes, please. I could use just a glass of water, if you have one," B'ram nodded, pleasantly surprised at the offer. So far Emerald Falls didn't seem half bad...
The steward nodded and got up. He poured both of them a glass from a pitcher where ices clincked against the walls. He handed the glass to the rider. "Can I ask your name?" he asked politely. "B'ram, rider of brown Girifith," the rider replied, somewhat ashamed that he had not offered that first. "I'm Corowal," the steward said. "Now, to why are you here...", he said and went to a cabinet and fetched a box there. "This is all the valuables that late steward Artias left. There's plenty of marks and some jewelry and I don't trust the tithe-wagon drivers enough to let them deliver this to the weyr." He patted the box. "This is the inheritance of brownrider M'tias and his mother Marathi. You should give this directly to either of them. There's my letter of explanation too." "Does it have exact amounts included in the letter? I shouldn't carry it without a detailed account." Last thing he wanted was to be accused of stealing anything himself. Of course, such behavior was certainly beneath him.
"Of course, also all jewelry is listed inside the letter, which is sealed by the hold's seal," Corowal answered with a smile. B'ram nodded and returned the smile. "Thank you. I appreciate it. I confess I'm new. Is M'tais a Dolphin Cove rider?"
"Yes, and his mother lives in weyr too, I believe. Which wing he rides, I have no idea, but he's very young lad," Corowal answered. "Well, if they are both at the Weyr, I will be able to find one of the other easy enough," the brownrider nodded. "So these belonged to the Steward before you then?"
"Yes, they did," Corowal confirmed.
"May I ask how long you have been steward here?"
"Since the beginning of month eleven, not very long," Corowal answered and cocked his head, curious about his questions. "So after the Harper Hall left?" The bronzerider noticed the Stewards curiousity. "I'm sorry, but being at Dolphin Cove we hear all kinds of stories of Emerald Falls."
"Yes, well after that. They must be the same stories _I've_ heard and I still find some of them hard to believe," Corowal said. Hard, but not impossible to believe. The more he learned to know the place, the more shocked he was. "Well of course rumors can be a bit overblown," B'ram conceeded pacifyingly. "I mean I certainly don't think _you_ fit all the things I've heard."
"I certainly hope so!" Corowal said with a slightly crooked grin.
"Well, thank you for your hospitality, sir." The brownrider drained the rest of his glass. "I suppose I had better not distract you any further."
"Safe skies, brownrider," Corowal replied and dismissed the rider. B'ram picked up the box and with a polite bow, he took his leave.
