The rain did not stop for five days.
As he ducked between raindrops, trying to get to Saibra’s office a
dry as possible, I’serin wondered when it would stop. It was common,
during this month, to get a high amount of rain but this seemed
excessive. Or perhaps he was misremembering. Surely he could find some Records on it later.
“At least, it is not frigid rain,” he remarked to Saibra as he entered
her office for their customary lunch.
"The runoff from the cliffs is really doing a number on the Weyrbowl
though," Saibra said. The waterfalls themselves were pouring more
water than she'd ever seen. Any trip through the Weyrbowl at this
point meant sloshing through ankle-deep water.
"I do believe the young dragonets are the _only_ ones enjoying this
weather," I'serin replied. He had spotted their clutch causing an
absolute mess in the mud near the Barracks yesterday. There was no way
that any of them were going to remain clean for long. "At least the lightning
has passed. I dreaded leading Threadfall yesterday if it was
still storming as it had been. We can return to sending out
sweepriders, though they'll not thank us for their wet gear."
--
**You've got to be _kidding_ me,** M'yvak sighed, his breath huffing
out in a waft of steam against the cool, rainy air.
}:I am not.:{ Pesrath stood on their ledge, water sloughing off his
sky-blue hide.
M'yvak muttered some curses under his breath as he pulled on his
riding coat popped the collar up to cover his neck as best as
possible, and then sloshed out onto his ledge. The seat of his pants
became immediately soaked as he settled himself on Pesrath's
neckridge. How in the name of Faranth had he been lucky enough
to have sweeps during a rainstorm?
**No one in their right mind will be out in a storm like this,** he
thought. **I can't believe they're actually sending us out.**
}:The sooner we go, the sooner we can return,:{ Pesrath said sensibly,
which only served to prick M'yvak's annoyance.

"I'serin, I hope you don't mind me asking but..." Saibra couldn't help
what Chioneth had already noticed. "You're spending a lot of time wit
K'mai."
Ice threatened to freeze I'serin's spine. Only Turns of suppressing
his emotions -- and the tiny, wild hope that Saibra, of all people,
would not judge him for who he took to bed -- kept the mask in place.
"We have been friends since childhood," he answered woodenly. His mind
desperately fished for something to justify K'mai's presence. "Like you, he
remembers that I need to eat." But the moment he said it, he
fearfully wondered if he had given something else away.
Her bright blue eyes studied his face for a moment. "It's good to have
someone to remind you to eat. R'enh does that for me."
"He takes great care of you," I'serin said, pushing warmth into his
tone. "As one should, when they treasure their weyrmate."
"And how do you treasure K'mai? As a friend or - " Saibra's eyes
widened when Chioneth cut through.
}:Pesrath is landing. They found something on sweeps.:{
M'yvak came tromping through the Weyrwoman's office door. His boots
squished with water and within seconds a puddle had formed underneath
him on the stone floor.
"Weyrleader, Weyrwoman," he panted. "I'm sorry for interrupting but...
I think I found something on sweeps. There was a makeshift flag set up
on the lower ridges of the mountain chain. When I flew in closer,
there were people... A lot of them. It looks like they've been living
in the caves there. I think... I think they're _holdless_. I didn't
know what you would want me to do. If they're in those caves, then
they have to be filling up with water, what with all this rain."
I'serin was on his feet without hesitation. "A flag? A distress flag?"
he asked, seeking clarification even as his mind began chasing down
outcomes. Holdless? "Which ridge?" he asked, suddenly wishing that
he was in his office, looking at the map that Saibra had given him.
The Weyrwoman knew immediately what her Weyrleader was thinking.
"Let's go," she said, pushing up from her desk. The trio moved down
the hall quickly to I'serin’s office.
"They're here," M'yvak said, putting his finger against the map of
Dragonsfall's territory. South of Opal Cove, just beyond the territory
line. Hard living was had in those regions but holdless never knew
lives of luxury.
I'serin was deep in thought for a moment before he said, "Holdless or
no, those are people in trouble," as he looked at Saibra to gauge her
mind. "We cannot allow them to perish."
Saibra nodded in agreement. "M'yvak, did you stop and talk to them?"
M'yvak shook his head. "I thought someone in leadership should go with
me. I wasn't sure what I could offer them."
"Are you ready to fly in the rain, Weyrleader?" she asked I'serin.
The Weyrleader gave a sharp nod. "Take me there," he commanded M'yvak
as he reached for his jacket. "Weyrwoman, I would request that you remain
here please. In case the holdless are...ruffians. It would also expedite any
operations we may need to begin if one of us is here."
It was in Saibra's nature to want to go and survey the situation for
herself, but recent events across Pern made her hesitate. She couldn't
risk Chioneth's safety. What if this was some sort of trap to lure
them out of the Weyr?
"You go," she nodded in agreement. "Relay back to me what you need and
I'll make sure it gets to you."
I'serin nodded solemnly. "I shall." He made a commanding motion to M'yvak,
indicating that the rider follow. "We fly."
