Almonteo

Almonteo

"Holder Toenas," Almonteo smiled as he reached for the man's hand. "Its a pleasure to meet you at last. Your daughter, Nasya, I hear is one of our brightest students. Indeed, all her teachers have nothing but praise for her."

Toenas took the hand of the Hallmaster, "I wish I could say the same Hallmaster, only I've heard some things from my daughter."

"Oh?" Almonteo fought to keep his smile from faltering. "Well, perhaps you would like to sit down?"

"It's about you being here, at this place," he began. "I've heard tales of improprieties between the dragonriders and people here."

"_Our_ people?" The Hallmaster frowned. "Surely not Nasya..."

"Not my daughter," replied the holder hastily. "She knows better, and knows what her family represents. But I've heard tales from here, and I need to know if they are just tales. I'd hate to think that there may be some truth to them. If there were..." His voice trailed off, but the rest of the words were unspoken. If he had to, he'd take his daughter home with him.

**Not another one...** Their placement in the Weyr was causing serious concern among the parents of the female students they had left. Their revenue was sorely needed, and losing another one... "Well, I hope I can put your fears to rest."

"Can you?" asked the Holder. "She wrote to me of dragonriders having parties late into the night, of them drinking and conducting themselves in a lewd fashion in front of the impressionable young people here. Even if they are not participating, it still is not good for our young people to see such things."

"I whole-heartedly agree," Almonteo nodded. "We try to keep our students and apprentices to _our_ part of the Weyr when possible. It seems some have escaped our vigilance. I shall have to talk to the Master of Apprentices about that."

"I hope that you will, and soon."

"We have had extensive talks with the students about the Weyrlife as versus Hall or Hold, warned them of places they should not go. But you know how young people are. If you tell them not to go somewhere, that is the first place they try to go. I assure you, Holder Toenas, it is a passing phase that will quickly die down once the newness of the Weyr wears off, and we will do everything in our power to keep your daughter and her friends where they belong."

"I see, well so long as you can guarantee that steps are taken..."

"Oh, most definitely," the Hallmaster nodded. "In fact, I appreciate that you brought this to my attention. I shall have a talk the woman in charge of the girls straight away and see if we can't figure out a way to safeguard them better."

"Good," nodded the Holder. "If anything untoward should happen."

"Please, Holder Toenas, I am a father of two daughters myself. I hear what you are saying."

"Then you understand my concerns."

"Perfectly," Almonteo nodded. "Nasya will be well looked after." "Then I thank you on her behalf."

"It is my duty and my honor, Holder. Thank you for coming to me with your concerns." Almonteo was not above flattery if it meant they could keep a student, for a while longer at least. Until the next incident. This was, after all, a Hall, not a prison. Students were bound to get lose... "Now, will you be returning to your Hold tonight, or will you stay with us a while longer? I would be honored if you and your daughter joined my wife and I for supper tonight." And that way he would have as little contact with anything 'untoward' as possible...

"I'd be honoured."

"Excellent," the Hallmaster smiled. "How about we take a tour of the Hall before that?" Anything to keep Toenas on their side of the Weyr. They just couldn't afford to lose _another_ student...
